About the Author
Amy is a children's literature specialist at the Orem Public Library, and a dedicated Laptime and Storytime enthusiast. Amy started her puppet addiction as the buyer for the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival Fanfare puppetry area. Now, she uses puppets on an almost-daily basis. As an advocate for early literacy and a proponent of the value of stories, Amy believes that puppets are a great avenue, not only for sparking an early interest in stories, but also for continuing the love of stories throughout one's life.

Mark H. Pulham Utah Arts Educator of the Year 2006 is a retired teacher, masterful puppeteer, skilled actor, and a long-time and dedicated children's librarian who works for the Orem Public Library. Mark's brand of twisted fairy tales, off-the-cuff hilarity, and extreme voice skills make him a highly sought-after puppeteer, voice-over artist, puppet skill teacher, and workshop leader. He can often be found performing to packed puppet audiences at festivals, schools, libraries, and centers for the arts.

Dallin began making his own puppets at the Provo Library when, as a storyteller, he found that there were never enough puppet characters available for his stories. He later honed his puppet-making skills as an intern at The Puppet School in Los Angeles, where he was subsequently hired. Frequently booked with puppet-making orders, Dallin still finds time to pursue his Puppet Master of the Universe Doctorate as a member of the Naked Hand team.

For puppet enthusiasts of all ages and abilities

My kids and I love puppets. We love making them and performing with them for friends and family. We ADORE this book. It's got enough material to keep us busy for ages. There are projects simple enough for the kids to be involved in. And still plenty of advanced material to challenge me. It's simply a delight, from the first page to the last. For the price, you'll be getting a steal, because you get the DVD and all it's content. The hilarious puppet performances woven through the DVD tutorials had us rolling. We're attaching a photo of some of our stuffets--puppets made from stuffed animals. (Tutorial in chapter one.)

Excellent book for beginning to intermediate puppetmakers or even someone who wants to build more elaborate cosplay pieces.

Dressing the Naked Hand arrived today and I devoured it and watched the first half of the DVD. The book starts very basic with turning a stuffed animal into a puppet and then moves along through glove puppets and up into more advanced builds with foam and fleece/felt (ala Muppet style). The book includes a DVD of additional demonstrations and instruction. The DVD is divided into two parts: Construction and Performance. I've only watched the first part so far. It follows the curriculum of the book, starts out reallllly basic and is designed to be kid-friendly but then segues into the more advanced techniques, demoing foam building and sewing and that part is actually quite good and will get you a long way toward building the character of your choice.

Includes some basic patterns in the book and the video on building posable hands with integral rods is alone worth the price of admission, in my opinion (something a lot of beginning puppetmakers struggle to get right). I also like his take on the mouthplate, which looks particularly comfy to use. I'll be testing it on the next puppet I make.

Good stuff all round. All the information is clearly presented and easy to follow as long as you already know how to use your sewing machine or at least how to thread a needle and follow a basic pattern. I wish that it had more advanced stuff eye blinking and movement mechanisms, but it's an excellent book for beginning to intermediate puppetmakers or even someone who wants to build more elaborate cosplay pieces. Solid book. Great addition to my library.

Heart Fans - A wonderful book by two of the top ladies in rock.

A most excellent read (took my time reading it over 6 days). Some random thoughts in no particular order...

The beginning of the book that builds up from their childhood, while a tad on the long end of things (compared to the rest of the book), is very important to laying a strong foundation for the rest of the book and the choices they would make. However after this deep dive on their childhood, it seems like they really glossed over the tours and their thoughts on the actual stages and the set lists (as I am sure like most any other band, set lists for tours can be the subject of passionate discussions about what songs to play and what songs to leave out). Ann touched on it briefly with some commentary on her talks with the Def Leppard lead singer and how they both felt somewhat a prisoner in terms of playing their big hits at every single show, but beyond that, not much at all. I would have loved to hear about what their favorite tours were (and why) in the 70's, 80's, 90's and the 2000's. They should have added in another section of pictures as well with more stuff from the mid 80's 90's and 2000's from their tours. I bring this up as Heart is an amazing live band in terms of their sound, and their live shows are top notch in terms of their stage presence.

A band like Heart that has played concerts in 5 different decades in terms of the 1970's through today, should have all sorts of interesting stories that bring us behind the scenes as a fly on the wall during their recording sessions and touring. There were some interesting/fun stories, so do not get me wrong, I just have a feeling these were just scratching the surface. Perhaps they felt it did not fit their overall narrative on the story they wanted to tell so they kept those stories dialed back.

Seeing as I am a guy that gobbles up almost any Led Zeppelin book I can get my hands on (and there are a good number of them), I would love to see something from Heart a little more deep on their entire career, vs. the deep dive on their childhood and then blasting through the 1980's to today at a frenzied pace. These were key years for Heart.

For instance, one of my all-time favorite Heart CDs is "The Road Home". It is my most listened to CD of all time. You can put it on anywhere and it simply puts a person in a zen-like state with those acoustic guitars and their lovely voices. And they simply touched on the recording of that CD and then nothing more.

Granted, as with most things, this is just a case of me simply wanting more of a good thing (as the book was a indeed good thing). If this book does well, I wonder if Heart would ever consider a career spanning large book with pictures and fun commentary of their CDs and their tours/adventures. Just look at some of the excellent Led Zeppelin books and join forces with one of those publishers/authors on something from the Heart archives.

From this book, I think we have learned that all those rumors about Ann turning her back on men in general are not true. And her willpower is steadfast once she puts her mind to it. And we also learned that Nancy is a pretty shy person in general (vs. her rocker pixie persona on stage in the middle of a live show as she rocks out for everyone).

From this book, I think we have also learned that life is tough - even for a couple of rock godesses like Ann and Nancy. They are flawed humans just like the rest of us. But it is those human flaws that made them who they are over the years by building their character which then really drove them in their darkest hours to keep on fighting/living and not give up. The story of their final hours with their mother and how doctors have found that the memory of music is the last thing to go with a person battling alzheimers (sorry if I spelled it wrong) had me wiping away tears. Just a couple of daughters singing for their mother to try and send her off surrounded by their love and their music was so vivid from the words on the page. The respect you gain for these two ladies as real people is overflowing after reading this wonderful book.

I cannot recommend this new book highly enough to any Heart fan (moderate fan to Fanatic fan). Anyone cruising these reviews on Amazon would most likely be a moderate Heart fan at a minimum. So if you are reading this, then go pick this book up straight away. You will enjoy the stories and the overall narrative/message. A couple of very strong ladies behind some very strong music...

But if their ancestor Hannah Dustin could wield a tomahawk and kill her captors to gain her freedom in colonial Massachusetts, then surely the Wilson sisters could don guitars, approach microphones, and slay audiences in the twentieth century. Eventually, of course, they would.

Here they share their story in their own voices: a duet on the printed page, toggling back and forth between the two women. It's as if we are sitting across the table from them in a coffee shop, just listening to the two of them recount their experiences and memories. Other voices of friends and fellow musicians chime in when necessary. (After all: the sisters are "merely" the front-women for a full-fledged rock band.) But this one belongs to the Wilsons.

This book is everything fans of rock music and of Heart could ask for. We learn of their beginnings and growing up in a mobile military family, and then settling down in Bellevue, Washington. The sisters played at any venue that would have them in the early 1970s; and at one point they were known as "Little Led Zeppelin" because they played so many Zep covers. We follow them to Vancouver, British Columbia, and tag along as the band called Heart begins to gain real popularity and initially, in Canada. After that, the path becomes a whirlwind course of music, touring, fame, and fortune, that spans the course of four decades.

Naturally, we are treated to some juicy tales from that insider world of sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. We meet the real-life men and witness the incidents that inspired the lyrics to "Magic Man" and "Barracuda." The surrealism of the performers' rising position shows up in their inevitable interactions with other celebrities: the members of Led Zeppelin themselves, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, the Van Halen brothers, Mick Jagger. Then there are all sorts of other "Devil's bargains" that arise, even beyond the easy availability of drugs and alcohol. The women learn firsthand about ethics and legalities of binding contracts in the recording industry. They are almost constantly confronted by the blatant sexism of the chauvinistic business they happen to be in, having to endure insults about appearances even while fending off unwanted advances. Even so, through the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, we can see their personal and professional lives change course with the inevitable progress of maturity.

It's always a gift to be able to see behind the curtain: to find out what went on in our favorite performers' lives while we were living out our own dramas, out in the audience. Now in their 60s (!), Ann and Nancy Wilson share their memories with a clear retrospective view. Not only are these women still performing, but they are still kicking and dreaming and above all, still keeping the love alive. It's easy to turn these pages to the strains of "Dog and Butterfly," "These Dreams," and other Heart songs ringing in your head, supplying a background to the narrative.

"Kicking and Dreaming" is highly recommended reading for rock music fans of any kind, whether or not they have ever followed Heart. This book is sure to create new "Heart Mongers" as a result. These talented sisters deserve them.

I wanted more Heart and Soul

Please let me state...I love Ann and Nancy Wilson. They both are brilliant Musicians beyond anyones comprehension. Their latest endeavor, "Fanatic" is by far one of my favorite CD's and love every single song on it. They have brought Rock and Roll to a whole new level of greatness.
However, I felt the content of the book seemed like a written interview and could've easily been discussed on a talk show. We've heard the stories before.
I felt their stories were often times predictable and no different from any other artist. (Of course I've been following their careers since the early days of "Dreamboat Annie") So with my previous comment, it's no surprize, I already knew most of the content.
Most of what was shared was very heartfelt and genuine. I loved the parts that discussed the early days of when the group first started. Especially about Ann and Michael Fisher. Their early childhoods were very fascinating. I really enjoyed the heartfelt stories in reference to their parents.
This book gives a very good and clear insight of who they really are. But then again, they've never made pretense of anything less. Ann and Nancy both are beautiful souls.
It's a good read and I enjoyed it. I finished it in 4 days, but felt it ended too abruptly. There could've been so much more added that just wasn't. I don't blame this on the Wilson sisters as much as I do Charles Cross and the publishing company. They missed out on an opportunity here to really show and focus on the true brilliance of these two incredible and amazing women.
I do recommend this book to anyone that is remotely a Heart fan. But true fans...much like myself, already know most of the content.
Would love to see a true documentary on Heart. Now that would truly be amazing.

If you've ever watched the pink panther then you've had a glimpse into the adventures of Arsene Lupin, the story of a gentleman thief, as bright as Sherlock Holmes, yet on the opposite side of the law. As for his nature, while Lupin is most definitely a criminal, it would be difficult to call him a villain. If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes or simply a fan of adventure and mystery, this is definitely a good read.

Arsene Lupin was translated into chinese by a passionate literature professor. As a child I used to read the chinese version and imagine the awesome adventures he goes on. Now in english I understand more details of the story as anything translated always loses a certain detail / flavor.

About the Author
A NASA research engineer by day, a pastry enthusiast by night, Jialin Tian developed a passion for making pastries while she was working on her doctoral dissertation on the reconstruction of irregularly sampled interferograms in imaging Fourier transform spectrometry. Since then, the art of pastry making has brought her endless enjoyment. She studied pastry and chocolate art with world-renowned pastry chefs Stéphane Glacier, M.O.F., Jean-Pierre Wybauw, Stéphane Leroux, M.O.F., and Franck Michel, M.O.F., at the French Pastry School in Chicago and PreGel Professional Training Center in Concord, North Carolina. In addition to pastry art, she enjoys painting, piano, travel, graphic design, photography, web design, cookbook writing, and video production and editing. She is the author of Macaron Magic, Macaron Magic 2: Individual Desserts and Showpieces, and The Bear and Fish Family Cookbook. She is currently an electro-optical systems engineer at NASA Langley Research Center. Jialin received her BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University and Purdue University in 1997 and 1999, respectively. She received her PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2004. She lives in Yorktown, Virginia.

An Excellent Guide to Becoming an "Awesome Aunt"!

I came across this book because I wanted to bake something special for my niece's birthday party other than cup cakes. The beautiful pictures on the cover captured my attention. Being an engineer, baking was not my cup of tea until I got this book. The detail step by step photos and illustrations are the key to success!!! I don't like to have desert too sweet, and the recipes in this book are just right for me and the kids. Following pages 16 and 17, my miss piggy came out so cute!
Overall, I think this book is a great source of inspiration for adventurous home bakers and even pastry professionals on how to create contemporary French macaron desserts. Major thumbs up!!!

very beautiful art pieces

gorgeous book, great artistic expression. If you can get your macaron shells to actually come out right this book will be very useful to you. Macarons are not easy to make, but practice makes perfect. This is not a beginners book, you should first get your macaron shells down and then experiment with the artistic side of french macaron baking. I recommend looking up macaron trouble-shooting guides online and practicing first and then jumping into this book.

I haven't own macaron magic 1 but macaron magic 2 is definitely for those whom already knows how to make macarons. This book covers on what more you can do with what you already know about macaron. This book is about decorations and ideas. I would highly recommend this for any chefs out there who seeks inspirations. I love it!

About the Author
Jonas Kjellberg is a serial entrepreneur and was a founding member of the Skype leadership team. Jonas had a vision to take lessons learned from hyper-growth companies, include that with what was taught at world class universities and revamp it to create a user-friendly mix and make it accessible to the world.

Tom Kosnik is a Professor at Stanford University. Tom started his teaching journey at Harvard. This is where he laid the foundation for Gear UP by initiating the work with the DDART framework – Diagnose, Decision, Analysis and Reality Test developed after many years of research with the goal to support students, entrepreneur and business to decipher new and exciting business opportunities. Lena Ramfelt holds a PhD from Stockholm University. She joined forces with Tom at Stanford and the two of them have been teaching together for the past 15 years. Lighter than air, stronger than dirt!

Gear Up is a great first pass through the entrepreneurial journey's landscape. It is light enough for the first timer, but the questions it asks are exactly right, and the answers it poses are also right on the button, so even an experienced entrepreneur is going to enjoy this book. But it is a godsend for a first timer. Can't imagine a better place to begin.

For a newbie, this was perfect.

I'm a complete newbie to business, running just a little online tutorial business. This was exactly the kind of book to walk me through the steps of honing my vision, shoring up concepts. attracting customers, and shedding toxic people. Honestly, it's so kind and gentle, but was the game-changer that made me into an entrepreneur instead of a tutor alone.

Mostly fluffy marketing material

A simple rip off of Osterwalders's Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers. The current book is a pure marketing pitch for the authors' company. The company name is listed on the front page so you will remember it. Furthermore, all 20 reviewers have only reviewed this one book, or in a few cases all books by the same authors. It is shameful to find amazon's review section so abused by "friends" of the authors.

I appreciate Osterwalder's book and here is my advice regarding that other book:
* If you are an entrepreneur with technical background, please read Osterwalder's book. Then hire a few people that have deep knowledge in those areas in which you have superficial skills.
* If you are an entrepreneur that want to game the system and get some cash from an investor to treat like a lottery game, you should also buy Osterwalder's book. Follow everything in detail and you will always find a sucker-investor that want everything streamlined and simplified the Osterwalder way. When you get your money probably your best odds will be playing the lottery.
* If you are an entrepreneur with management skills, you don't need any of these books. They all use to cookie cutter format. One size fits all. Follow the nine steps and you will have a successful business. This is plainly false. You need some deeper thinking about your strategy than this book provides.
* If you are an author of another Osterwalder copy, make sure your friends do not write similar three-line, glowing, five-star reviews. Also get your friends to review some baby powder and self-heeling books because they come across more credible if they also have reviewed other stuff.

Another much better rip off of Osterwalder is The Business Model Navigator: 55 Models That Will Revolutionise Your Business, but I prefer Osterwalder. The current book is a zero star book, but I average up to one star out of generosity.

It Must Have Been Cathartic

While there are quite a few misdirects in this book, I did enjoy the frenetic pace and desperate tone. That along with its short length has it come across as an impassioned speech for change. These short excerpts give you a sense of what I mean:

- "Hype and B.S. are nothing new in the world of advertising, but things are getting out of hand."

- we need "to end the delusional thinking and start doing creative work that actually sells products"

- "That's when I learned that stuff that doesn't work...that's code-named 'branding'."

- "When and why did the absurd idea that you can create a brand just with ads - worse, with vague ad empty 'branding campaigns' - come to pass"

- "Mediocre agencies found it simpler to babble about values, positioning, branding, etc. than to do the hard creative work necessary to say something interesting enough about a product to help move it off the shelves."

On one level Moruzzi is correct. Advertising has become entertainment not sales. Branding has become about mission-led organizations not sales. It allows the purveyors of those services not to be held accountable for...sales. Incredibly, that is why they exist but they shy away from the task. Moruzzi rants some more, "no empty and vague feel-good happy-shiny-people-holding-hand 'branding campaign' has ever created a brand."

Having worked in start ups, Moruzzi admits that the catalyst for this book is the ubiquitous but highly ineffective digital advertising. He likens this type of advertising to solutions in search of a problem. It is of the most intrusive and least relevant sort and the majority of the book is a rant against it alone. That is fine and well-deserved but what makes the book a little less credible is praise for traditional advertising from the famous Creative Revolution.

He highlights the same campaigns that any marketing and advertising book does from the Mad Men era. The problem in doing so is he is missing the point that there were only a handful of good ads that each iconic agency from that time continue to hold up as effective. Arguably, this time in advertising became a game of more not better. Teressa Iezzi, staff editor at Fast Company magazine and previously editor of Creativity, wrote in her book, The Idea Writers: Copywriting in a New Media and Marketing Era, “For every “Think Small” in the 1960’s there was a bottomless bowl of the same insufferable dross that’s served up on any given commercial break and that covers the ground from forgettable waste of everyone’s time and money to actively annoying disincentive to ever buy the product being advertised.”

Moruzzi holds up Howard Luck Gossage (1917–1969) or "The Socrates of San Francisco" as a beacon for today's marketers. Gossage focused on storytelling and knew he was in the business of selling. So that makes sense but he fails to link the perceived successes of Gossage to what digital marketers what must do today. I am more a fan of the now defunct N.W. Ayer agency. Their work is the true beacon from advertising's debated history.

He hits a few good points when he takes on social media. This starts with the observation that "most companies do not like their customers." He makes the point that companies are mistakenly sending customers to social media platforms away from their own site that they control. Moruzzi says, "Most companies are scared to death about getting out of their steel and glass castles and having to open up to the outside world. Look at their uninspired advertising. Look at their lame websites. But all of a sudden they want to be hip on social media? Who do they think they are kidding?"

On content he suggests that brands shouldn't post anything unless they are willing to pay to distribute. This he believes would improve the quality and cut down on the overall amount of communications. Lastly, the author makes a point that I have subscribed to. Marketers are always attracted to the next shiny new toy thinking it to be a magic panacea. So the industry has trained itself to chase fads while training consumers to disengage.

While I believe the book is not accurately titled, it comes clear what he is out accomplish. Moruzzi wants marketing to be a considered craft again. A craft whose purpose is to sell. I hope he writes another but that the topic be on the 9 startups he has worked on in the last 16 years. That experience has prompted him to be frustrated and jaded. A deeper exploration into that might prove more valuable.

Popping the Social Media Balloon!

As one of the original “Mad Men,” I have seen many changes in the advertising world over the last forty odd years. None has been as dramatic as the rise of digital and its offshoot, social media. In common with all the other “latest and greatest,” sweeping claims are being made as to the importance of making “social” an integral part of your marketing program. Assertions about its effectiveness are supported by soft metrics such as clicks, affinity, awareness, friending and so on. Now Massimo Moruzzi, who has lived through the trenches of the dot com implosion and now the ever accelerating growth of social media, is extremely well qualified to stick a giant pin in the ever expanding social media hot-air balloon. And by heck, he certainly does that. He delivers cogent, rational and incredibly researched evidence that social media is, in fact… Little more than another iteration of the smoke and mirrors the ad biz has subjected the unwashed masses to since the days of obscene graffiti advertising brothels on the walls of ancient Rome
