In the Preface to the first edition, originally published in 1980, we mentioned that this book was based on the author's lectures in the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Lomonosov University in Moscow, which were issued, in part, in mimeographed form under the title "Probabil� ity, Statistics, and Stochastic Processors, I, II" and published by that Univer� sity. Our original intention in writing the first edition of this book was to divide the contents into three parts: probability, mathematical statistics, and theory of stochastic processes, which corresponds to an outline of a three� semester course of lectures for university students of mathematics. However, in the course of preparing the book, it turned out to be impossible to realize this intention completely, since a full exposition would have required too much space. In this connection, we stated in the Preface to the first edition that only probability theory and the theory of random processes with discrete time were really adequately presented. Essentially all of the first edition is reproduced in this second edition. Changes and corrections are, as a rule, editorial, taking into account com� ments made by both Russian and foreign readers of the Russian original and ofthe English and Germantranslations [Sll]. The author is grateful to all of these readers for their attention, advice, and helpful criticisms. In this second English edition, new material also has been added, as follows: in Chapter 111, �5, ��7-12; in Chapter IV, �5; in Chapter VII, ��8-10.

It is clear that this book contains important and interesting results obtained through a long time period, beginning with the classical Bernoulli's law of large numbers, and ending with very recent results concerning convergence of martingales and absolute continuity of probability measures. Let us note especially that the great number of ideas, notions and statements in the book are well-motivated, explained in detail and illustrated by suitably chosen examples and a large number of exercises. Thus, the present book is a synthesis of all significant classical ideas and results, and many of the major achievements of modern probability theory. In the whole it is a welcome addition to mathematical literature and can become an indispensable textbook for courses in stochastics.

This book contains a systematic treatment of probability from the ground up, starting with intuitive ideas and gradually developing more sophisticated subjects, such as random walks, martingales, Markov chains, ergodic theory, weak convergence of probability measures, stationary stochastic processes, and the Kalman-Bucy filter. Many examples are discussed in detail, and there are a large number of exercises. The book is accessible to advanced undergraduates and can be used as a text for self-study. This new edition contains substantial revisions and updated references. The reader will find a deeper study of topics such as the distance between probability measures, metrization of weak convergence, and contiguity of probability measures. Proofs for a number of some important results which were merely stated in the first edition have been added. The author has included new material on the probability of large deviations, on the central limit theorem for sums of dependent random variables, and on a discrete version of Ito's formula.

The name should be "Basics of the probability"

It covers almost all of the "basic" ideas in probability.
This book is one of the most helpful book for me. You will "learn" what is going on in the field of probability theory. The book is especially suitable for self studying. If you want to learn probability theory, buy this book, dig into it, study again and again if you don't understand a particular part. But the book does its best in terms of clarity of exposition, so you can understand with a careful reading.
It will provide a strong tool and you can use this tool efficiently in your professional career. But there is a caveat. You might end up with a tool that you will never use again. The book is suitable for professionals and deep minds.

A great probability book for both undergraduate and graduate learners

I write this to pay my highest respects for this guru mathematician's work. This is truly a great book, not only for graduate students but also undergraduate and researchers. The book covers 8 chapters, starting with classic approach, so that one can see the evolution of the theory of probability, and one could avoid the risk of being lost in this forest.

It has a particularly useful Chapter 2, which provides the readers with necessary mathematical foundation for them to go on. Of course, the theory itself is challenging and we will/should never expect an easy-to-read mathematics book. The transformation from classical approach to the modern one is exhibited clearly by this great Russian mathematician. You will find almost everything in here, even some critical part that touches on stochastic differential equations, that are very useful for applied fields of sciences such as mathematical finance.

Index of keywords is also very useful and in details. We should also notice that the book is not too thick compared to other multi-volume textbooks. This is a real advantage if you have to carry it along while working or when reading for leisure.

However, be careful with some examples and solutions. I found at least one problem in which Prof. Shiryaev provided wrong solution, e.g. problem on girl vs boy child on page 25 of 2nd Edition. The final result is correct, but the evolution shows a wrong method.

Despite this minor thing, a matter of Buyer Beware, I find it a really great book that has accompanied me for over 7 years now. It is worth every penny. Thus do not waste your money on others before trying this. You will agree with me at the end. The book is a piece of art!

About the Author
Ross Gay is the author of two previous collections, Against Which and Bringing the Shovel Down. His poems have appeared in American Poetry Review, Orion, the Sun, and elsewhere. �He is an associate professor of poetry at Indiana University and teaches in Drew University’s low-residency MFA program in poetry. He also serves on the board of the Bloomington Community Orchard.

Gorgeous book through and through

While tons of other poets are slaving away in their Towers of I-Don't-Care and Despair-Is-All-There-Is, kissing ass like crazy, Ross Gay is outside getting his hands dirty with plants and words and listening to the birds and the sky. These poems have life, and thus the reader feels more alive after having read them. He sings songs of love and healing while staying true to the tough parts of life. Definitely worth the hype, and he's giving me hope for poetry.

This is a surprisingly useful book for newcomers to Visual Basic.NET. Buy it for the book, itself, not for the online presentation.
The book comes with an accompanying website with audio/visual presentation for each chapter consisting of a PowerPoint presentation along with audio. Warning: You can only view the presentation with a high speed broadband connection. Dial-up can only get the audio and sometimes not even the audio. The online presentations are fine, but the value comes from the book itself, not the online presentation.
I usually shy away from books with phrases like "In a weekend", "in 24 hours", "hour-a-day crash course" etc. You really can't learn a new programming language in a few hours. HOWEVER, THESE BOOKS ARE AN EXCEPTION. The authors don't try to convince you that you can expect to learn VB.NET in a weekend. If you do all the lessons (some of which may take a bit more than an hour) plus try to do a few original applications on your own, from scratch, you WILL get a very good foundation of the subjects being taught. It will take about 4 - 6 weeks to go through the entire book (not 24 hours or a weekend, like other books promise), based on 60 - 90 minutes a day 5 or 6 days a week.
I own both the VB.NET and the ASP.NET (which is also VB.NET based) books and recommended them to my students who wanted to learn VB.NET.
This books is designed for people who don't have the money or the time to attend a live, in-class course on the VB.NET. The authors anticipate, in advance, some of the questions you might ask to a live instructor if you were learning VB.NET in a classroom environment. According to the authors, they have taken their own experience as instructors and put that experience into the book. It works pretty well.
Two caveats:
(1) the book doesn't cover everything about .NET or about VB.NET or about the .NET Framework. It's provides a self-study, introductory course on VB.NET. If you complete the book, then you will be in good shape to take on some more advanced topics such as the details of ADO.NET (an entire subject in itself, check out Murach Publisher's Murach's VB.NET Database Programming with ADO.NET by Doug Lowe, Anne Prince - ISBN: 1890774197 for that) and ASP.NET (check out Wiley Publisher's ASP.NET in 60 Minutes a Day by Glenn Johnson, ISBN: 0-471-43023-4 for that or Mike Murach Publisher's Murach's ASP.NET Web Programming with VB.NET by Doug Lowe, Anne Prince ISBN: 1890774200 for that).
(2) The online presentations are only available to broadband subscribers. However, even without the videos, this would be a great introductory book for beginners who cannot take a classroom course on Web development using VB.NET and ASP.NET.

An excellent book let down by poor support

Visual Basic.Net in 60 Minutes reads well from the beginning. The tutorial-style presentation is an excellent idea, with each chapter supported by an introductory streaming video presentation by Bruce Barstow, hosted on Wiley's web site. The only problem is that the video intros don't work after chapter 3 which is a real let-down. Wiley's "Technical Support" has, as yet, produced no response, despite repeated emails plus a not inexpensive international phone call to have this issue rectified.
In summary, an excellent read for a programmer with some VB experience moving across to this VERY different world of VB.NET, but will disappoint anyone intending to use the advertised on-line lectures until (if/when??) Wiley get their act together & get these videos working beyond chapter 3!

This engaging book explores "soul" and "spirit" as experienced and expounded upon by two creative geniuses whose works, and living examples, are of enormous significance for our time: C.G. Jung and Rudolf Steiner.
As one familiar with the works of both men but an expert on neither, I enjoy Gerhard Wehr's perspective and generous style. Absorbing his take on their biography, key ideas, and methods is like hearing favorite musical pieces interpreted by a previously unknown but gifted and seasoned conductor; their life comes forward anew, encouraging subtler reflection, even when I end up seeing differently or would opt for a different vocabulary.
Jung & Steiner is a trio, really: an introduction by Robert Sardello, Wehr's text, and then an appendix with three lectures on "Riddles of the Soul" by Hans Erhard Lauer. It should be enormously helpful to depth psychologists and anthroposophists alike, and virtually any Westerner seriously interested in discovering individual and collective spiritual potentials.
Robert Sardello's introduction is worth the price of admission by itself, and gains in power and value when reread after completing the book. Sardello sets the stage by offering that "Steiner followed the spirit side of the Grail myth; Jung on the soul side," then he makes a strong case for why we need to call upon both methods in our current crisis situation. His mature observations on distinguishing love and desire, and working intelligently with both, are wise and fertile.
Wehr's text compares similarities and differences in the conceptual shells of the two systems in admirable detail. More significantly, though, it juxtaposes core insights of these two prolific geniuses in a way that coaxes something new from the tension between them.
With profound respect for the integrity of both men, Wehr treats the concepts they produced as accurately expressing concrete experiences of their respective realms of expertise. While he finds many commonalities, their broad divergences may prove more useful—to the extent that they help us distinguish the voices of psyche and spirit in ourselves.
Wehr's Jung is fundamentally a physician, focused on healing mental disturbances, receptively tuning in to deeper experiences of psyche to midwife needed changes in a patient's conscious attitude or structure, generally reluctant to speculate (though with notable exceptions) what, if anything, might lie beyond psyche's archetypes. His Steiner is fundamentally a spiritual researcher, inspiring the active development of soul faculties that can give us conscious access to a realm of differentiated spiritual beings that underlies those archetypes and the world, and is immanent in the evolution of both. Modulating these perspectives, Robert Sardello suggests that trying to go Steiner's way without first, or at least also, going Jung's way, is unlikely to take us where Steiner is pointing; and that one pursuing depth psychology alone easily falls prey to believing that any strong desire we have, because it is of soul, must be good.
The book concludes with three brilliantly clear lectures by Hans Erhard Lauer. Originally published in 1960, and appearing here in English for the first time, they express Lauer's perspective on how anthroposophy enlarges upon and clarifies the findings of depth psychology.—Reviewed by Paul Cash

In Sardello's Foreword, he summarizes Wehr's goal in this extended and perspicacious comparison of the groundbreaking psychologists Steiner and Jung. Like Sardello, Wehr has long been interested in "bringing the soul psychology of C. G. Jung into a relation with the spiritual science of Rudolf Steiner." Such a creative synthesis could "give birth to a new psychology—one that is fully cognizant of the spiritual and soul worlds and how human consciousness forms in association with them." While recognizing that Jung and Steiner use different terminology and have different conceptions, Wehr nonetheless recognizes essential interests, concerns, and ends between them. These are found mostly by understanding and analysis, and to some degree deconstruction, of the notions of individuality and its formation and development which were central subjects and concerns of each seminal psychologist. For both Jung and Steiner, symbols and experiences relating to religious beliefs, death, sexuality, and other major factors of human life were of primary importance in human nature and individuality.

In an appendix, Hans Lauer relates the essence of Wehr's synthesizing comparison to anthroposophy in an approximately 40-page essay with an ending section titled "Depth Psychology and Anthroposophy."

With its varied parts of Foreword, text, and appendices, this study of Jung and Steiner is enlightening and absorbing for serious students of psychology and spirituality.

About the Author
Gerhard Wehr was born in Schweinfurt, Germany, in 1931. He is a free-lance author and teaches at the Diakonenschule Rummelsberg in Nuremberg. He is the author of numerous publications in fields such as Christian spirituality, depth psychology, and Anthroposophy. He is also the author of a biography of C.G. Jung.

Robert Sardello, PhD, is cofounder (with Cheryl Sanders-Sardello, PhD, in 1992) of the School of Spiritual Psychology. At the University of Dallas, he served as chair of the Department of Psychology, head of the Institute of Philosophic Studies, and graduate dean. He is also cofounder and a faculty member of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, as well as author of more than 200 articles in scholarly journals and cultural publications, and is a former faculty member of the Chalice of Repose Project in Missoula, Montana. Having developed spiritual psychology based in archetypal psychology, phenomenology, and the spiritual science of Rudolf Steiner from more than thirty-five years of research in this discipline, as well as holding positions in two universities, Dr. Sardello is now an independent teacher and scholar, teaching all over the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., as well as the Czech Republic, the Philippines, and Australia. He is a consultant to many educational and cultural institutions and a dissertation adviser at numerous academic institutions. He is author of several books, including Facing the World with Soul; Love and the World; Freeing the Soul from Fear; The Power of Soul: Living the Twelve Virtues. and Silence.

Psychology as a Discipline of the Soul

The most insightful book on anthroposophy as a spiritual psychology in print. Wehr's contrast of Jung with Steiner not only highlights the similarities and dissimilarities of Jungian psychology to what psychosophy might be, but also gives the reader a deep insight into Steiner's meaning of self-knowledge (which is the central tenet of anthroposophy).

Most valuable in this book is the brilliantly written Foreward by Robert Sardello, and the Appendix which includes three terrific lectures by Hans Erhard Lauer ('The Riddles of the Human Soul in the Light of Anthroposophy'): a reconciliation of knowledge and faith through individuation.

Sound explorations

This is an intelligent, comparative exploration of the work of Rudolf Steiner and Carl Jung, written by a follower of the first and a biographer of the second. Both were explorers of 'consciousness' and though they both had scientific trainings, they yielded towards the revelatory and the religious in their ultimate views about what it means to be a human being. The territory they traversed in doing so had many parallels, assessed and compared by Wehr, in ways that are mostly helpful, and sometimes illuminating.

For me it was a quick but good review of information I've already learned in formal training. Someone that hasn't taken classes would likely benefit from the ideas presented. The ideas are expressed simply and clearly. I was glad to see the author caution readers that there are dangers in leading the client or in giving suggestions. The book is short, to the point and ultimately directs the reader to his other products.

About the Author

C. Henry Edwards is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee in 1960, and recently retired after 40 years of classroom teaching (including calculus or differential equations almost every term) at the universities of Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, with a brief interlude at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Georgia's honoratus medal in 1983 (for sustained excellence in honors teaching), its Josiah Meigs award in 1991 (the institution's highest award for teaching), and the 1997 statewide Georgia Regents award for research university faculty teaching excellence. His scholarly career has ranged from research and dissertation direction in topology to the history of mathematics to computing and technology in the teaching and applications of mathematics. In addition to being author or co-author of calculus, advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations textbooks, he is well-known to calculus instructors as author of The Historical Development of the Calculus (Springer-Verlag, 1979). During the 1990s he served as a principal investigator on three NSF-supported projects: (1) A school mathematics project including Maple for beginning algebra students, (2) A Calculus-with-Mathematica program, and (3) A MATLAB-based computer lab project for numerical analysis and differential equations students.

 

David E. Penney, University of Georgia, completed his Ph.D. at Tulane University in 1965 (under the direction of Prof. L. Bruce Treybig) while teaching at the University of New Orleans. Earlier he had worked in experimental biophysics at Tulane University and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in New Orleans under the direction of Robert Dixon McAfee, where Dr. McAfee's research team's primary focus was on the active transport of sodium ions by biological membranes. Penney's primary contribution here was the development of a mathematical model (using simultaneous ordinary differential equations) for the metabolic phenomena regulating such transport, with potential future applications in kidney physiology, management of hypertension, and treatment of congestive heart failure. He also designed and constructed servomechanisms for the accurate monitoring of ion transport, a phenomenon involving the measurement of potentials in microvolts at impedances of millions of megohms. Penney began teaching calculus at Tulane in 1957 and taught that course almost every term with enthusiasm and distinction until his retirement at the end of the last millennium. During his tenure at the University of Georgia he received numerous University-wide teaching awards as well as directing several doctoral dissertations and seven undergraduate research projects. He was the author of research papers in number theory and topology and was the author or co-author of textbooks on calculus, computer programming, differential equations, linear algebra, and liberal arts mathematics.

David T. Calvis is Professor of Mathematics at Baldwin Wallace University near Cleveland, Ohio.  He completed a Ph.D. in complex analysis from the University of Michigan in 1988 under the direction of Fred Gehring.  While at Michigan he also received a Master’s degree in Computer, Information, and Control Engineering.  Having initially served at Hillsdale College in Michigan, he has been at Baldwin Wallace since 1990, most recently assisting with the creation of an Applied Mathematics program there.  He has received a number of teaching awards, including BWU’s Strosacker Award for Excellence in Teaching and Student Senate Teaching Award.  He is the author of a number of materials dealing with the use of computer algebra systems in mathematics instruction, and has extensive classroom experience teaching differential equations and related topics.

Not the easiest book to follow. I ended up getting a Chegg subscription for some extra help. ALthough, just about every problem has a solution in the back of the book (odds and evens).

Doesn't teach clearly at all

This book was required for my differential equations and linear algebra class. The only problems are that the chapters don't explain anything clearly at all and the solutions manuals don't show solutions at all. The solutions manual only shows intermediate answers and skips all the nitty-gritty. Anyway it's not very useful. It turns out that the book is only worthwhile for the problems themselves.
