Italian Horror, by Jim Harper

ITALIAN HORRORS covers Italian horror films released between 1979 and 1994. Why those years? Well, primarily for convenience. They mark the release dates of Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE, the film that instigated the last great wave of Italian horror, and Michele Soavi's DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE, the last great Italian horror film. After the release of Soavi's film, relatively few new Italian horror movies were made; the trend had run its course, and such films were no longer seen as commercially viable. The aim of this work is to guide the unfamiliar viewer to the best films of the period, while hopefully steering him or her away from the dross.

There are far better ways to spend $25
By M. Theologidis
If you're reading this then you are most likely a die-hard horror afficionado like myself. Of course any die hard fan already knows to some extent of Italy's incredibly diverse and prolific b-movie industry, the horror scene a pivotal part in it.

I'm sorry to say that Jim Harper's book falls terribly terribly short of the occasion. A monstrous disappointment, an altogether haphazard effort that barely even scratches the surface of the subject it purports to discuss and ignores arguably the best era of Italian horror. The early 70's. The book spans the period from Lucio Fulci's "Zombi 2" (1979) to Michele Shoavi's "Dellamorte Dellamore" (1994).

Why anyone setting out to create a convincing roadmap of the Italian underground scene would decide to completely omit the 60's and 70's, arguably the zenith of a genre that was quick to decline, mystifies me. What about the dozens of gialli that emerged in the early 70's? What about Dario Argento's 70's work, which includes (well known yes, but essential in any book about Italian horror) such gems as Profondo Rosso and Suspiria? What about master craftsman Sergio Martino, perhaps only second to Dario Argento in the giallo realm? What about second rate but competent genre directors like Aldo Lado, Duccio Tessari, or Pupi Avati? What about the godfather of Italian horror, maestro Mario Bava? It's Mario Bava we're talking about here, how can a book titled Italian Horror NOT feature extensive writeups on the man who almost single-handedly defined the genre? You guessed it, there's nothing of the above to be found here and "Italian Horror" immediately stops being an essential book on the subject right there and then.

What "Italian Horror" ends up offering instead is a series of reviews on schlocky psychotronic exploitation b-movies that span the 80's and early 90's. You're asking; couldn't I just read up on all these flicks on IMDB? Definitely. Is Harper's critical analysis so insightful as to warrant $25 despite all that? Absolutely not. Mr. Harper doesn't even seem to be a journalist, film scholar, or at least passionate fan. He lacks the eloquency, power of convinction, and capacity for subtextual analysis or at the very least the entertaining prose, to make his texts worth reading. IMDb reviewers write better. Simply put, at no point did I feel I was at the hands of a master.

To add insult to injury, Harper evinces no passion at all for the subject. Does the guy even LIKE Italian horror or is this simply a case of exploiting a bibliographic gap for a quick buck? Sure, no one claims Paganini Horror is a staggering masterpiece of modern cinema. Ratman will probably never be mentioned in the same breath as Citizen Kane and Metropolis and Fulci is a bit short of Tarkovsky and Bergman. But when you set out to write a book about all these things, surely there must have been something that attracted you to them in the first place. Harper's writing offers no clue as to what that "it" was.

I'm not arguing that most of the movies featured here aren't bad movies. No, but they still carry with them a psychotronic charm that makes us love them, despite (or perhaps because of) their obvious flaws. If you're ready to shell out $25 for a book about Italian horror, much less write one about it, that means you have already come to terms with their flaws and still love them.

Now the back cover reads "Italian Horror covers Italian horror films released between 1979 and 1994. Why those years? Well, primarily for convenience."

If you want convenience, then don't write a book. Good things come to those who try and frankly Harper didn't try hard enough to make this book worthwhile. I suggest taking a page from Stephen Thrower's massive tome "Nightmare USA", which offers a rich probing informative insight into American exploitation, and how well and in depth the subject matter is handled, not to mention all the photos, stills, posters, interviews, reviews and critical analysis. This pales by comparison. I mean, you're writing a book about Italian horror. How hard would it be to track down and interview Dario Argento, Ruggero Deodato, Michele Shoavi and Lamberto Bava while they're still alive?

Jim Harper offers nothing that can't be found on IMDB. At the exorbitant price of $25 for the relatively small size of the book (a little more than 200 pages), the poor handling of the subject matter and the altogether lackluster edition, I suggest waiting for the definitive book on Italian horror. This isn't it.

Terrible...
By William Lecklikner
This book is one of the worst I have ever read on ANY movie genre. I am a die hard horror fan, especially when it comes to Italian horror. But the author wrote this book as though he were not a fan of the genre. I liken it to reading reviews by someone like Roger Ebert when he id looking at the horror genre. These films ARE NOT trying to win Oscars. They are made for fans of blood and gore and sometimes a plot. Please do not waste your money on this book.

BRILLIANT LOOK AT AN OVERLOOKED HORROR GENRE
By Tim Janson
I'll admit I am no expert on Italian Horror films but as I read through Jim Harper's fantastic book, I was surprised at just how many of these films I had seen. I chalk that up to two things: First having a girlfriend in the 1980's (who is now my wife) who loved horror films, and second, having a number of drive-in movie theaters in my area which always made for a cheap date for a young guy on a budget.

Whether you are an Italian Horror aficionado or just a casual fan, you'll definitely enjoy Jim Harper's book because he IS an expert in the genre. Harper begins "Italian Horror" from Midnight Marquee Press, with a detailed history of the industry and it is a wonderful primer for fans of the genre. We learn about Italian horror pioneers like Mario Bava, Antonio Margheriti, Dario Argento, and Ovidio G. Assonitis. Heavily influenced by American films, these early Italian horrors quite often worked on themes presented previously in their American counterparts with takeoffs on movies like "The Exorcist" "The Omen", "Alien" and "The Amityville Horror". What many casual fans like myself recall about the Italian films were the sub-genres: Cannibal films, zombie films, slashers, and others. They ended up becoming their own cottage industry, building on what American directors like George Romero, Wes Craven, and John Carpenter created, and doing so on budgets so tiny they make "Halloween" look like "King Kong". As harper points out, American films typically had advertising budgets that were bigger than the budget of many Italian films!

While Harper goes back to the 1950's with his history, the main thrust of the book is Italy's peak period of horror from 1979 through 1994. Harper clues readers in on this rise and eventual fall of horror in Italy with American films helping to lead to the decline because they were simply cheaper for Italian TV networks to show than their native counterparts.

The bulk of the book is a nearly 200 page guide to Italian Horror featuring over 100 films complete with title (as well as any alternative title names), year of release, cast and major credits, synopsis, and Harper's critique of each film which is the major reason to buy this book. These films range from the Argento classics like "Inferno", "Opera", and "Tenebrae"; Lamberto Bava's "Demons"; and Lucio Fulci's "Zombie to bottom of the barrel stuff like "Hell of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Mummy".

I was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of "Dellamorte Dellamore" which I didn't realize was an Italian film. You probably know this film by its American title "Cemetery Man" that is one of the most quirky and fascinating horror films I've ever seen and stars Rupert Everett.

"The Gates of Hell", "The Seven Doors of Death", "The Church"...they are all here in this great book. The book also features bios of the major Italian directors, screenwriters, and technicians and a comprehensive bibliography. Harper sheds the spotlight on a genre that has been overlooked, and often disregarded by critics. You'll have a great time tracking down some of these great films for your own viewing.

The Red Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem, by Marcus Samuelsson

Southern comfort food and multicultural recipes from the New York Times best-selling superstar chef Marcus Samuelsson’s iconic Harlem restaurant.

When the James Beard Award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson opened Red Rooster on Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem, he envisioned more than a restaurant. It would be the heart of his neighborhood and a meet-and-greet for both the downtown and the uptown sets, serving Southern black and cross-cultural food. It would reflect Harlem's history. Ever since the 1930s, Harlem has been a magnet for more than a million African Americans, a melting pot for Spanish, African, and Caribbean immigrants, and a mecca for artists.  These traditions converge on Rooster’s menu, with Brown Butter Biscuits, Chicken and Waffle, Killer Collards, and Donuts with Sweet Potato Cream. They’re joined by global-influenced dishes such as Jerk Bacon and Baked Beans, Latino Pork and Plantains, and Chinese Steamed Bass and Fiery Noodles. Samuelsson’s Swedish-Ethiopian background shows in Ethiopian Spice-Crusted Lamb, Slow-Baked Blueberry Bread with Spiced Maple Syrup, and the Green Viking, sprightly Apple Sorbet with Caramel Sauce.  Interspersed with lyrical essays that convey the flavor of the place and stunning archival and contemporary photos, The Red Rooster Cookbook is as layered as its inheritance.

Review

"Samuelsson’s unorthodox Red Rooster Cookbook is a literary love letter to Harlem...he goes beyond recipes to write an ode to the neighborhood—and the people, places, and problems in it—that made him."
--VanityFair.com

“[T]he Red Rooster Cookbook is more than a collection of recipes and anecdotes from [Samuelsson’s] Harlem restaurant. It is a tribute to this world-renowned New York neighborhood and the people who live and work there — just as Samuelson so proudly and happily does.”
 —Chicago Tribune

"Mr. Samuelsson was born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden, but he has made Harlem his home, and it’s clear in 'The Red Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem' that he has found magic there. The restaurant, which opened in 2010, was a meditation on modern Harlem, an embrace of its past and a vision for its future — vibrantly diverse, effortlessly cool...the book’s real charm lies in what it captures: the spirit of this particular place."
—The New York Times

"Beloved New York City chef Marcus Samuelsson strikes again with The Red Rooster Cookbook. The chef — who has four other cookbooks, plus a memoir, to his name — presents recipes from his dynamic Harlem restaurant, each reflecting the unique cultural influences of both the place and the man, like Ethiopian spice-crusted lamb and brown butter biscuits. Along with recipes, the book offers essays and vintage photos of Harlem scenes gone by."
—Eater

"Samuelsson sheds light on what compelled him to leave the world of foie gras and foams to cook, literally and figuratively, closer to home. The result is a restaurant-and now a cookbook-featuring his style of soul food, embracing American, Ethiopian, and Swedish comfort dishes... [M]usic, specifically jazz, informs Samuelsson's neighborhood, his writing, and given its many riffs and collaborations, his cooking style, too."
--Fine Cooking

“While Harlem has long occupied a mythical place in the American imagination, it is also a place where human beings live, work, raise and educate their children, and eat. The revitalization of Harlem is one of the most important social and economic developments of this generation, and the role of cultural institutions is central to that process. To a list including the Studio Museum and the Schomburg Center, one must add the Red Rooster, which has rapidly become the gathering place for the cultural glitterati, where conversation and music are nourished by Marcus’s sublime cuisine. Who would have thought that Ethiopia and Sweden and the American South would meet on a menu in Harlem?”
—Henry Louis Gates Jr., Harvard University

“I met Marcus Samuelsson when he was just twenty-four years old and already a three-star chef at Aquavit. His humility and humble ways impressed me so much. Marcus taught me how to appreciate the work and the cooking that I do. His inclusive cuisine served at Red Rooster personifies Harlem and the gumbo pot of this country.”
—Leah Chase, Dooky Chase’s Restaurant, New Orleans, Louisiana

“Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster Cookbook has all the honesty, heart, and good taste that we have come to expect from this great chef. As I read this book, I felt immersed in Marcus’s glorious Harlem-centric universe. And then when I cooked from the book, I felt as if I got to make a little of his magic into my own.”
—Dana Cowin, Creative Director, Chefs Club International, And Former Editor-In-Chief, Food & Wine

“In the Red Rooster Cookbook, Marcus will show you in a very tasty way his passion and talent for soul food and his love for music. The book is full of colorful images and original recipes inspired by the melting pot of his life in Harlem. Marcus’s celebration of American cuisine will take you on a tantalizing journey that has transformed the dining scene in his legendary New York neighborhood.”
—Daniel Boulud, Chef/Owner, The Dinex Group

"His new book, The Red Rooster Cookbook, celebrates the place where his pickled herring gets along well with cornbread. Vibrantly eclectic is an understatement for the mix of recipes here, from Fried Yardbird and Brown Butter Biscuits to Puerco en Cerveza, Trout with Ginger and Citrus and Ethiopian-Spiced Lamb. As a delicious treat, Samuelsson walks us through the lively Harlem scene in lyrical essays studded with photos."
— BookPage

“[With Red Rooster,] the chef was embracing his adopted neighborhood, and the cookbook that comes out of that project is a way to further it: the forward is by Hilton Als, the photography encompasses not only food but the people of the neighborhood, and the pages include other voices as well, from a local jazz pianist, and from a man who’s worked at the Apollo Theater for half a century. But you are here for the food, and Samuelsson does not disappoint.”
—Los Angeles Times

“Takes us into [Samuelsson’s] kitchen and his neighborhood. There are stunning portraits of local denizens, a foreword by Hilton Als, playlists for each chapter. The recipes draw on soul food, Samuelsson’s Ethiopian heritage, and more — from fried yardbird to lamb and grits with grilled chile vinaigrette to Obama’s short ribs, part of a menu when the president came to eat. As much as it is a cookbook, this is a paean to a place.”
–Boston Globe

"Chef, restaurateur, James Beard Award winner, and frequent Chopped judge Samuelsson presents the recipes that helped make his Harlem restaurant Red Rooster a must-dine destination."
—Library Journal

Delicious, decadent, intensely flavored food with fun play lists!
By Jennifer Guerrero
I love this book. The recipes we’ve tried were all delicious and interesting! He’s an intense flavorist – not an apologetic bite to be found. There are cool photos throughout. I love making playlists to go along with cookbooks, and Marcus includes his own playlists, chapter by chapter. It’s just frosting on the cake, but I really appreciate good frosting.

Pictured below:
1) Obama’s Short Ribs – p168, Spicy Sweets and Green Beans with Spiced Butter – p170 & 62, and Cornbread with Honey Sage Butter – p63. Holy wow! Is that ever a terrific dinner! The ribs braise in wine, stock, ginger, lemongrass, etc, and they’re tender as can be. The cornbread is easily the best I’ve ever had, and the sweet potato green bean dish is face meltingly spicy, and yummy, packed with Berbere seasoning and fresh jalapeños.
2) Mac and Greens – p119 with Killer Collards – p123 in Spiced Butter – p62. I can see why customers wouldn’t let him take it off the menu. Two pounds of collard greens simmer in a half pound of the spiced butter. I thought it was excessive til I tasted it. Ridiculously, wonderfully decadent.
3-4) Shrimp Bird and Grits – p 204. I was flipping through the book at the library, and noted about 50 recipes I wanted to try, and then saw this one. You fry two chicken thighs, then immediately separate the meat from the skin and toss it on a cooling rack. The meat gets shredded and tossed into grits with pimento cheese. Top that with a poached egg and tomato-y shrimp. Then you blitz the chicken skin with Saltine crackers and parmesan in the food processor to create “bird dust” that gets sprinkled over the whole thing. Chicken dust?! That’s the stuff of fairies, and the sort of fairies that you really want to visit. I hit the buy button on Amazon right in the middle of the library, and I’m so glad I did! This is beautiful. Do you write in your books? If you do, this is a time sensitive one, so I find it really helpful to scribble out a timeline.
5-6) I think this could win over the biggest brussels-phobe. Brussels Sprouts with Bacon Dip - p295, and Peanut Bacon Pork Chops - p214. The dip is a homemade bacon mayonnaise made with the bacon grease, then the bacon is folded back in. Best dinner so far! Total wow!

For The People of Harlem
By prisrob
Cookbooks are great reading material for me. I read them like any book. In years gone by cookbooks were filled with recipes, now they have a story within them. March Samuelsson has filled his cookbook with stories.

He starts with a Foreword by a friend, Hilton ALS, that gives us a feel for the chef. And, then, Marcus gives us the story of how he came to a Harlem, how he named his restaurant, and how and what The Red Rooster came to be. These kinds of stories teach us about the man, his principles, his philosophies and his trademark. Fascinating and filled with everything we need to know.

The nitty gritty of this cookbook is perfect. Each chapter begins with a story or several stories to give us a feel for what is about to come.13 chapters starting with The Pantry, and his is filled with everything and anything you need to know, through It's Always Sweet In Harlem. In between are the Lucious recipes he favors. Birdland gives us his famous fried chicken recipe and how he came to put his recipe together. My favorite chapter is Family Meals. These are the foods the staff and his family eats. Lucious foods that make our mouths water. And, because I am a dessert person Sweets From Harlem. His whoopie pies are made from pistachios and wonderfully whipped cream cheese. Does it speak to you? I love the recipes, but my favorite part were the stories. Marcus Samuelsson is a fabulous writer. I know I would like this man were I to meet him in the street, infectious personality, and the man works hard.

If you have ever wondered why Marcus Samuelsson named his restaurant, The Red Rooster, you will learn it here. Many wonderful photos of the people he meets, greets and loves. He provides a Playlist for his chapters, and I streamed many of his favorites from Amazon while reading this book. This is a must have, people!

I'm Impressed from the Get-Go! Clearly a great cook with a ton of cooking knowledge.
By Keith Sinders
Sometimes the people that write the very best cookbooks aren't ones that are big names that we instantly recognize. I honestly wasn't familiar with Samuelsson, but it doesn't take much browsing through his cookbook to realize that Marcus is an incredibly talented chef. As I browsed through his cookbook, I noted one piece after another of cooking advice that I've slowly but surely garnered as great cooking knowledge on my own. On top of that, he also adds in a number of new pieces of great advice that I hadn't seen before.

One example is where he describes a number of the ingredients he tends to use and why. You can see right from the beginning that this guy knows his stuff. One he mentions that I've started using more lately is chipotles in adobo. I've seen a number of recipes call for chipotles, but often cooks forget to use the adobo sauce. I'm a waste not kind of cook. And like he states, they give a nice kind of smoky heat, so I've started adding them to my mom's baked beans recipe for a nice smoky flavor and a little heat, which makes them amazing!

And normally when I browse through a cookbook, I see a few good recipes and a lot of "Ehh!" recipes as I look through the ingredients and preparations. As I read through the ingredients on his recipes, the flavor combinations sound amazing, along with the proper preparation to make the most of the flavors and textures of the food. I don't think I'm going to find many "Ehh!" recipes in this cookbook.

From what I see, it looks like this guy really knows how to cook incredibly. I'm not saying that because of how he did on some competition that I never watch, it just shows it in his recipes, his knowledge of the ingredients and preparations of those ingredients that really make for a great dish.

Right now there are probably only about 2-3 cooks that I actually follow on Amazon because their cookbooks just seems to stand out above the crowd. Kenji Lopez is one. He's absolutely amazing in his cookbook "The Food Lab". Deb Perelman is another. Smitten Kitchen is a great cookbook. And Samuelsson just got added to the list.

These are cooks you will either learn a ton from. Or when you taste nearly every one of their dishes, you go "WOW!!!".

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Author, psychologist and pioneering Buddhist teacher Kornfield writes his best book yet (and his previous ones were pretty good). His newest uses the same sweet narrative voice, provides convincing and illustrative anecdotes and stories, and reaches into world traditions and literature as well as contemporary scientific research. This book offers a systematic and well-organized view of Buddhist psychology, complete with occasional diagrams. Concepts and practices are placed in a framework that explains and connects them. It's all done with an eye toward application; most chapters end with exercises. Kornfield has been practicing Buddhism for close to 40 years, a lasting discipline that has produced this masterful book and a seasoned view of life that acknowledges a lot of oopses. As a mediator and psychologist, he has also witnessed some serious angst, including his own, and draws on it for illustrative power. Not everything here is new, least of all the title, but then the Buddha isn't either. The best is left for last: joy you can seek for yourself and others. Just keep your meditative seat, and this book by your bed. Kornfield comes across as the therapist you wish you'd had. (Apr. 29)

Review
“I love this gentle, brilliant, and incisive book. I read it slowly, with amazement at its richness and wisdom, relief at feeling so understood, pleasure in Kornfield’s beautiful writing and sweet humor, and gratitude that such understanding has been expressed in the written word. This Wise Heart changed me.” —Anne Lamott, author of Traveling Mercies and Grace (Eventually)

“What an extraordinary mind is Jack Kornfield’s. Curious by nature and brightly shining from birth, tempered by suffering, both personal and worldly, it guides us, in this profound and useful book, on a journey of consciousness unfamiliar to most of us born in the West. The Wise Heart is one of those books, more than a book, more like a companion, that encourages our bravery to meet whatever confronts us in life with a caring and tranquil heart. It is a transformative gift from one of the great spiritual teachers of our time.”—Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple

“The Wise Heart is Jack Kornfield at his most wonderful and illuminating. He brings to life a way to understand and cultivate mindfulness, compassion, lovingkindness and true wisdom that penetrates to the core of what liberation is all about.”—Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Coming to Our Senses and Arriving at Your Own Door

“The Wise Heart offers more than remedies—it points the way to a life of flourishing.”—Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence

"This masterpiece of a dedicated life’s work unveils the principles of an ancient ‘science of mind’ that are woven seamlessly into a wondrous map of the human heart—one that is astonishingly consistent with the discoveries of modern neuroscience.”—Daniel Siegel, M.D., author of The Developing Mind and The Mindful Brain

"Warm, funny, moving, and tremendously inspiring, The Wise Heart brings Buddhist psychology to life. Reading it is, in itself, a transformational experience.” —Mark Epstein, M.D., author of Thoughts without a Thinker and Psychotherapy without the Self

“Jack Kornfield harvests a lifetime of experiences to create a masterful, clear, and moving picture of the human mind and heart, a picture whose hopeful healing power I find astounding.”—Norman Fischer, former abbot, San Francisco Zen Center; author of Sailing Home: Using the Wisdom of Homer's Odyssey to Navigate Your Spiritual Journey

“Through clear teaching and wonderful storytelling, Jack Kornfield inspires us to realize and embody the love, presence and freedom that is our very essence.”—Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance

"One of today's most compeling and inspiring guides to spiritual growth."—Science of Mind

“His best book yet…. Kornfield comes across as the therapist you wish you’d had…. Provides convincing and illustrative anecdotes and stories, and reaches into world traditions and literature as well as contemporary scientific research.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Life Improvement Book If You Are Ready for It
By Jay Mitchell
On one hand, the Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield is a book I wish I had read many years ago as in the duration of reading it I have benefited greatly. I have improved my meditation practice. I have become more at peace in my work and social life. I have stopped pretending and trying to seem like something I am not. I have found small moments of total freedom which I find are expanding day by day. On the other hand, I am not sure that I was ready for it until now. To benefit from its content, one has to be open to meditation, Buddhist psychology, and ready for changes to the core. I strongly recommend this book if you are ready for it. In fact, I have already personally recommended it several times.

Love this book- important thoughts to ponder and apply
By Lynnette
Love this book so much, I bought a Kindle version while reading the paper version. I wanted to have it with me for moments I am in waiting rooms or on planes. Easy to read a few pages and see at least one thought I want to ponder. Also write some thoughts in my journal to reinforce the memory of them. A fiend and I are going to go through the end of chapter "applications", perhaps one a week. There is much to gain from this book!

An excellent resource for learning to understand Buddhist thinking
By Gently flowing
Before purchasing this book, I had taken it out of the library and soon realized that it was a book I needed to own. For those interested in Buddhist psychology but of a background that makes it difficult to understand what might seem to be abstract Buddhist teachings, this book is excellent. Psychologist Jack Kornfield presents the information principle by principle using examples from his years as a Buddhist monk and subsequent reintegration into American society and eventually as a teacher and a co-founder of meditation centers. He presents this information in an accessible manner to the Western mind. After each section, there are Practices that he recommends as a means to help the reader understand and act based on these principles. His kindness and wisdom come through on every page as he guides the reader on this journey. I love reading it. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try and broaden their understanding of the Buddhist approach to being and incorporate it into their lives.

Seeing the Real You at Last: Life and Love on the Road with Bob Dylan, by Britta Lee Shain

"I've never seen a Bob Dylan smile, except in photos or on the stage. Not the real thing."

Britta Lee Shain was a friend of Bob Dylan's until he asked her to join him on the road in the mid 1980s, at which point she became more than a friend. In this intimate and elliptical memoir of their time together, at home in Los Angeles and on tour with Tom Petty and the Grateful Dead, she offers a unique portrait of the romantic, earthbound, and poetic soul trapped in the role of Being Bob Dylan.

"If you were my woman, I'd be worth four times as much."

Entire libraries of books have been written about Dylan, but few--if any--offer any lasting insight into the man behind the shades. Until now. Written with the elegance of a poet and storytelling snap of a novelist, Seeing The Real You At Last is a poignant and tender romance that reveals Dylan's playfulness, his dark wit, his fears and struggles, his complex relationships with the men and women in his life, and, ultimately, his genius.

Review

"In the annals of books about Bob Dylan - and there exist libraries of these volumes - there is no book like this one. It is second only to Dylan's own Chronicles in being the most poetic book on the subject, and stands alone at being the most romantic." - American Songwriter

Don't fall for the 5 star reviews. Nothing more than uninteresting fly-on-the wall gossip.
By Pearl Cawley
This is a very self-absorbed book. It’s about a fan getting to be with her idol, but it isn’t told excitingly. The good reviews must be by friends, which as Ms. Shain reveals, she has many. Ms Shain's writing is not bad, but it is boring and I couldn't get beyond page 99, because every sentence was like a play-by-play of her every move near or away from Dylan. I love Bob. A writer should use a diary as a source but not as the actual narrative.

Attempting to read this was like being on a crowded staircase but the author gave no incentive to push through and continue the climb. There is nothing that made me want to stick around to witness the pinnacle of her sexual rendezvous with Dylan. My "thought-dreams" have more riveting content, if you Dylan groupies know what I mean. If Ms. Shain had made herself interesting enough to care about her "adventures," perhaps I would have continued reading. She is clearly a very pretty lady who got Mr. Dylan's attentions by hanging out with the right crowd people. She may have rubbed elbows with that “in-crowd,” but she does not even succeed in making Dylan’s "inner circle" interesting. When one considers The Beatles' road managers, entourage, and what that eye of the hurricane was like, this was complete blandness in comparison. Dylan is at their level if not higher, but there is no excitement at any given time whatsoever ascribed to Dylan's presence. She paints no allure to be around those people at those very many blase' parties. Her boyfriend, Dylan’s road manager, is a misogynistic widower, who criticizes her, yet seems unperturbed by her flirtations and simultaneous pretend-nonchalance around Dylan.

Pamela Des Barres' groupie tome, I'm With The Band is far more captivating because she herself has a personal spark, that makes her a central figure in her tell-all about being with some very famous rock artists.. Ms. Shain’s bland diary style, is interesting to herself, since these are her memories, but this does not a Bob Dylan-related memoir make. I read as far as I could until the egocentricity got unbearably boring as to continue to humor it.

Excellent trip into (or near) Bob's off-stage life.
By Craig Danuloff
I was highly skeptical, as very interested in Dylan but not the kiss-and-tell aspect, in terms of both the romantic and just generally think Bob deserves his privacy and these kinds of things are at some level a betrayal I don't really want to support. But a review that raved about the writing and the information shared got me to buy it, and I'm very glad I did. The writing is excellent, and as the author points out she's been a professional writer working on other books before and it shows. It's really a pleasure to read. The details surrounding Bob's life offstage, how he moves the the everyday world (and manages the environment around his professional life/relationships) are the most compelling. The actual kiss/tell is pretty minimal and in many ways it's clear the personal relationship while real was just a month or two and with anyone else would be worth a mention, but the time in his sphere was a few years and for me more interesting. This is definitely for the Dylan hard-core, but does provide a level of insider-view that few others do and at a very high quality level. There are thankfully not a lot of conclusions drawn or interpretations of his actions made, just informative descriptions of situations and scenes that provide an impression. For the huge Dylan fanatic its another piece of the puzzle. In the end I do think it's a betrayal, and would have preferred it not be written or at least released until well into the future - but here it is and however hypocritical it may be I read it and have to admit enjoyed it immensely.

I knew Britta as a songwriter, and so was ...
By Amazon Customer
I knew Britta as a songwriter, and so was excited to see her new CD out. But I had no idea about her involvement with Dylan. The book is a page-turner, very well-written, and sheds a lot of insight into both Dylan, although I think the book is much more about her emergence from his shadow after the mess he left behind. Be that as it may, for anyone who loves Dylan, or loves trying to gain an understanding into the way popularity/fame works, and what it can destroy, this is a must read.
