amazon rentals are awesome as usual

Not that you're given much choice to the textbook you buy, but I figured I leave my two cents here anyway. First of all, amazon rentals are awesome as usual. It shipped fast and it also means I'm not stuck with this horror of a textbook after the semester ends. The text itself is as dry as you possibly can get. I'm an accounting student who has gladly read through managerial and financial accounting textbooks alike, but this is somehow even worse to digest.

The author goes on tangents constantly, and seemed to have just discovered what a thesaurus was when he wrote it. There's a difference between writing at a college level and using obscure words to make a sentence lose meaning. I enjoy reading, and I can read for either business or pleasure just as well, but this text makes me dread every chapter assigned. It really needs to decide if it wants to be a math textbook or a "history of finance" one, because it does justice to neither aspects of the subject.

But, as I said, what choice do you have? Get the book, or fail the class.

About the Author
Lee Smith is a Registered Master Plumber and certified vocational math instructor. His many years of practical and teaching experience in the pipe trades includes domestic and industrial work in the areas of refrigeration and air conditioning, deep sea diving vehicles, and nuclear piping. In addition to several certificates in the trades, Mr. Smith has held Master Plumber credentials for forty years. He earned his A.A.in applied science and technology from Thomas A. Edison State College, and his B.A. and M.A. degrees in education from Temple University.

Michael A. Joyce is a Class 1 licensed plumbing contractor in North Carolina with thirty three years of plumbing experience in commercial, industrial, and residential installations and repairs. He has authored several plumbing books and teaches a variety of plumbing seminars and classes throughout the country, including classes for the United States Pentagon, New York City hospitals and Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC) of NC. Don't waste your money, most of the chapters are about 2 to 3 pages long and are very generic. There are about 85 covered topics but not much time is spent on them.

Can be helpful

Ok, let me first admit I've only read the first five chapters. But, already I can see that his method is based on the fact that you need a certain amount of settlement money to, of course, pay a settlement amount. Soooo, what about those of us who's budget is so tight with paying minimums on cards as well as other necessary monthly expenses, and don't have money put aside for settlement? I don't think the author would have had settlement money either if he hadn't received the $45k gift that allowed him to make the settlements. That's what I would like to know.

The book is not really updated

Just finished it tonight. It says the book was updated to 2012. It really isn't. The whole story happens before 2010, before the CARD Act was passed. It's written more like a novel of what he went through. The book was just ok.

I picked it up about a year ago while I was going through a ruff time getting sunk by one credit card that had been maxed out at close to eighteen thousand dollars during my divorce two years prior. I had been struggling just to keep up with minimum payments and was falling behind, my credit core had gone from a 798 to a 602. I started to use your techniques outlined in the book and in six months I finally was able to settle the debt for thirty five hundred dollars (roughly twenty percent of what I owed). I checked my credit score today, about three months after the settlement was completed, and now have a credit score of 747. This on top of my dropped blood pressure and ability to save for my children's college again has completely turned my life back on track. All I can say is thank you and I will recommend this book to anyone I run into with the same circumstance

The Good, The Bad, ...

The Bad - My impression is, and I may be wrong here, that in the rush to get this book to print much was left out: particularly in information concerning the final half of the Main Quest series of quests. It is at this time that the details of what lies ahead for the player is of most import. But it is not here.

The Good - Having said that, I think the book has a lot of good advice for the player and I would recommend the purchase of this book for all those looking for upping your game. One of the best features, and most interesting to one that likes to get into the characters and plot of the game, is the reviews of each of the main characters in the story line - great job.

Good Info but Needs Editing

There is a lot of good information in this book on how to spot this type of abuse. I recognize I have contact with several people who fit this profile, a few of whom I have to deal with on a regular basis. Just knowing what's happening when I get that "something is wrong here" feeling is a tremendous help. I feel like knowing what's happening, while it's happening, will make it easier to extricate myself if possible and, if not, stand up for myself.

I'm only halfway through the book, though, and I'm struggling. While there's a lot of good information, I feel the book would benefit from an editor. Many times the wrong word is used or is just plain missing (or several are missing--sometimes I just can't intuit what the author meant). I can overlook that; however, I feel like I'm being talked down to by the author, like a quick, breezy lecture to a young person (perhaps I just don't like the author's tone in general).

I will finish reading for information's sake because there are some wonderful points contained within.

Very on point and accurate

Once upon a time, I was in a pretty bad relationship. This book definitely brought me back to those times, but with a different perspective. It really framed what she did in terms of manipulation, and it fit to a t. That's how I knew that this book was super accurate - it brought back many of the feelings of inadequacy that I had from her, and the examples used in the book were very familiar. Damn.

Kudos to the author for presenting a delicate issue in such an accurate and insightful way.

Very eye opening stuff

Emotional manipulation, as the author says, is very subtle and isn't entirely conscious at first, even to the manipulator and abuser. It takes time and slowly seeps into a relationship, until you're left with the realization that you're not even happy... yet you are very afraid of being left.

Lots of very insight into the techniques and exactly why they work. I think the examples are very, VERY good and will help others recognize if they are falling prey to those situations. I recommend.

Irving Abella is the J. Richard Shiff Chair for the Study of Canadian Jewry and a professor in the Department of History at York University.

Harold Troper is professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. The co-author of None is Too Many: Canada and the Jews (with Irving Abella), his most recent book is The Defining Decade: Identity, Politics, and the Canadian Jewish Community in the 1960s.

Book blew me away. Who knew that the Canadians were as disgusting and anti-Semitic as the Americans with NO regard for the lives of ANY of the adults and children that were begging to enter. There were the most ridiculous excuses as to why not to allow them to enter the empty country of Canada. Now I have an entirely different spin on Canada. Not a good one.

A Must Have

I have read a stack of writing and storytelling books a mile high, and this one is a standout.

Truby does an excellent job delving into the nuances of story, Vogler's 'The Writer's Journey is also a great help, and Larry Brooks' book, Story Engineering, explains story structure clearly and is indispensable imo, but this book lays it out plain how to write marketable fiction.

The only downside to this book is that, like many 'Dummies' books, it's not really for a complete dummy. I have helped out new writers with this book, and some of the subtleties go over their heads. It is most useful in the hands of someone who already has a rudimentary understanding of the concepts he explains. Being a Dummies book, he hits all the steps and 'how-tos' but doesn't dive too deeply explaining them. This is not a criticism. That is what I expect when I pick up a Dummies book.

If you are an experienced writer or someone who has learned all the basics but need to brush up, (you know what POV is, you understand the difference between a scene and a sequence) or if you want to have a quick reference in one book at your fingertips, this is it.

I don't want to scare away those just learning. Buy this book! Even the brand new writer can benefit greatly from it, since it gathers many concepts in one package that I had to learn by reading many books.

What I do suggest for the newer writer, is to buy the following companion books:

Techniques of the Selling Writer, Dwight Swain
Self-Editing for Fiction Wrighters, Renni Brown

I say this because Ingermanson bases his books on the teachings of Swain and Brown, or at least what he says accords with what they teach, Swain especially. Writing Fiction for Dummies is a wonderful, fairly-detailed outline on how to puke out a novel and form it into something others will want to read, but as I said, he will state a step and move on without bogging you down in theory, which is what I like about this book.

Swain's book could be thought of as the deep reference for this Dummies book. If you want to delve deeper into what Ingermanson is teaching you, Swain's book will fit the bill perfectly, which is why I recommend it as a companion.

Writing Fiction for Dummies is all about helping you get your words down on the page and organizing them in a way that will make them marketable. I wish I had picked this book up first.

I am a writer and have taken a lot of writing courses, have a lot of writing books. This was super helpful to me as a source of help as I am fairly new to fiction writing. Much better than this author's, How to Write a Novel Using the Snowflake Method. In my opinion, this book had the same info in a much more usable format.

I'm a total amateur who has been writing creatively since I was a young person, and have always aspired to some day complete a novel. I used to be a fly by the seat of my pants type of writer with a binder full of unfinished ideas. Tired of this approach, I was looking for a book that would help me formulate an organized, well-structured writing process. This book delivers. There are so many good writing tools and tips in this book that it feels like having a personal mentor sitting next to my computer. I especially liked the idea of a three-act structure with a three crisis overlay. This really helped me think about the big picture and develop a formula for my novel.
