This book presents a broad overview of the field of multimedia production. The book describes the field at large, explaining the concepts, rather than focusing on minute details of using particular software packages. Separate chapters are devoted to the multimedia "building blocks", text, sound, images, and video, and the various special characteristics of these media (such as formats and how compression techniques work). A typology of multimedia authoring software is developed, and brief descriptions of individual authoring packages are provided to exemplify each type. The accompanying CD-ROM contains evaluation copies of many of the packages mentioned (such as Macromedia Director, Adobe Freehand, and SoundEdit) for further exploration by the reader. The book also provides extensive coverage of the multimedia development process, from the roles of the members of a multimedia development team, to planning, costing, producing, testing, and delivering products. I have found the book to be quite successful as a textbook for introduction to multimedia courses. It would also be useful for anyone who would like to understand what the multimedia business is all about.

Getting dated

This has been one of the leading books for the field. Most useful in a advanced HS or College course.

However the material is becoming dated. Needs a newer focus on the new interactive media environment that integrates internet applications rather than thinking of the "web" and "multimedia" as two areas. They have merged!

The book publisher and author needs to study the fields using multimedia such as advertising and the ad agencies, marketing agencies, entertainment agencies, eLearning companies and functions, entire web sites based on interactive multimedia in large companies and so on.

Still has value but will need a lot of field experience to sift through what is current and what is just old history.

Dont meet my expectations

I have the 8th edition of this book and what really surpise me is that , it doesnt have the answer to the questions. You can only view it on the point..to impossible. If youre a nursing student with a limited budget.. Stay away from this book.

Does not include answers. 9th edition does.

This WORKBOOK does not even have answers to its questions. If this textbook and the accompanying workbook are forced upon you, buy the 9th Edition, NOT the 10th... for some reason the publishers decided it would be a fabulous idea to OMIT the ANSWERS to a WORKBOOK, used for studying. Great call, people. Clearly, you did not have the actual users of the book in mind when making that choice.

DON'T buy the 10th or later edition, if you have to buy it at all. Complete waste of money.

Geoffrey A. Hirt is currently Professor of Finance at DePaul University and Director of Equity Research at Mesirow Financial. He received his PhD in Finance from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, his MBA from Miami University of Ohio and his BA from Ohio-Wesleyan University. Geoff has directed the Chartered Financial Analysts Study program for the Investment Analysts Society of Chicago since 1987. From 1987 to 1997 he was Chairman of the Finance Department at DePaul University and taught investments, corporate finance, and strategic planning. He developed and was director of DePaul's MBA program in Hong Kong and has taught in Poland, Germany, Thailand, and Hong Kong. Geoff has published several books. The sixth edition of Fundamentals of Investment Management was released in July 1998 and is published by Irwin/McGraw-Hill. Additionally, Geoff is well known for his book Fundamentals of Financial Management published by Irwin/McGraw-Hill. Now in its eighth edition, this book is used at over 600 colleges and universities worldwide, and it has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish. Geoff plays tennis and golf, is a music lover, and enjoys travelling with his wife, Linda.

Yoshiko Tsukiori is a graduate of Joshi Bijutsu College of Fine Arts in Kanawaga, Japan. After working for apparel companies she became an independent freelance designer, creating designs for women, babies and children. She has written numerous books in her native Japan, primarily featuring projects for chic women's and children's wear.

Pretty good translation of a major Japanese sewing book

If you are at all acquainted with the current market of Japanese sewing books, you probably have heard of the name Yoshiko Tsukiori. She's one of the most popular and prolific authors in her field, with a multitude of fans around the world. This book is the first in a series of 3 volumes named Stylish Dress Book, and very often seen discussed in sewing blogs and community sites. For example, the French sewing community Japan Couture Addicts [...] has literally hundreds of member posts of projects from this book (both the original Japanese and the French editions). I highly recommend visiting this site to see what sorts of styles are included in this book, and to inspire your creativity with ideas of how the styles can be executed.

The designs in this book have a distinctly quaint, countryside aesthetic, best suited for printed woven cottons, such as those produced by Liberty of London (prominently featured in this book). If your tastes range more toward the current RTW trends or more modern deconstructed styles, you might not find the dresses very appealing. The sizes in this book covers bust measurements 78cm (30.75 inches) to 102cm (40.25 inches), which is broader than what the original Japanese edition offered. It seems they added in 2 larger sizes for the American edition. If you are larger than this size range, you might still be able to use the patterns provided, as the designs have a fairly large amount of ease, and most people seem to go a size or two down to achieve a closer fit. If you have a little bit of experience with pattern resizing, then it would probably be pretty straightforward to resize the patterns, as the pieces are mostly boxy and geometric, and the construction is pretty simple and mostly involves straight-line sewing.

*A note to people not familiar with Japanese-style sewing books*
The patterns in this book, as with pretty much all other Japanese sewing books, come printed on sheets of poster-sized paper inserted in the back of the book. The pieces overlap with each other, to save space, but they are color-coded to help you tell them apart. You must trace them onto a separate piece of paper (e.g. Sewable Swedish Tracing Paper or Bienfang Sketching Paper) and use the traced copy to make the dress. You also have to add seam allowances after you trace out each piece, and the instructions for each dress includes a cutting layout diagram that shows you how much to add for each seam. It is important that you are aware of this if you are considering buying this or any other Japanese sewing book. If you are unable or unwilling to trace out the patterns and add seam allowances by hand, then this book will not be of much use to you.

The quality of the translation is very good. Even though you can obtain almost all of the necessary information through the diagrams alone, the written directions are very well translated, conveying clear meaning and retaining the succinctness of the original Japanese. This edition does seem to omit the short general information section from the Japanese original. There's one page in the front of the book that has the size table, with a paragraph explaining the general format of the patterns, but otherwise no guidance is given for how to use this book, nor are there any general construction tips. Thus, you should probably have some rudimentary experience with dressmaking before tackling this book. This book assumes that you already possess the sort of knowledge given in sewing books like The Colette Sewing Handbook. If you have already made one or two garments, you can probably handle the projects in this book just fine.

I was very glad to see that they kept the metric measurements from the original edition. They added in Imperial unit conversions to make it more accessible to American readers, but noted that the metric measurements will give greater precision. Seriously, why are we still on Imperial units? Even the British have gone metric now.

One thing that irks me a little about this edition is that the printing seems to be lower quality than the Japanese original. The colors are super-saturated and the photos are fuzzy. One of the things I really love about Japanese sewing books is the gorgeous photography of all the styles in the book; and the poor printing quality of the copy I received rather detracts from that enjoyment. Perhaps later batches will have better printing quality.

Overall, I rate this edition at 4.5, for its low-quality printing. I'll round it up to 5 since the translation is quite good, and all of the important content from the original edition is faithfully retained. If you enjoy making clothes, you should definitely pick up a copy, as there are lots of easy and fun dresses in this book, and all the construction steps are not only clearly explained in words, but also meticulously diagramed. If you are able to obtain a copy of the original Japanese edition, I would recommend getting that instead, as that edition has much higher production values, and so would probably be more visually enjoyable.

All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sewing. The dresses are pretty easy to make, but also give you a lot of room for creativity (as you can see on Japan Couture Addicts), and so novice and veteran sewers alike will find something interesting to do with this book. The diagrams are simply phenomenal, and make the construction process very easy to understand, so it's accessible to sewers with limited experience. Finally, I think it's nice to explore some different styles. The dresses in this book are very different from the types of patterns you get from McCall's and Simplicity, and I think being exposed to a different aesthetic helps you build your personal design vocabulary, which will help you create more awesome clothes :) I also highly recommend the Drape Drape series, by Hisako Sato, and any book by Machiko Kayaki. Love Love this book and patterns

I love these patterns. My problem is deciding what to make first! I recommend searching online for images of what others have made to get a good idea of just how amazing some of the patterns are, for further inspiration, and ideas on alterations to the patterns. After doing so, it opened my mind up to so many more possibilities. There is a great blog/shop that will come up in your search. The blogger makes several of the dresses and tops in this book and she makes suggestions on alterations, other books and patterns, and uses such wonderful fabric choices. (I'd include the link but it would just get blocked, it might have something to do with MakeSomething. And no I'm not affiliated with the website, just a fan.)
I should say that perhaps I didn't read closely enough, but I thought this book was in Japanese and was happily surprised to find that it is in English. Also, many people comment on the sizing being really small, but the patterns are cut large, so I think if you want a more fitted style, you size down from the size that is equivalent to your actual measurements.

Having fun with these patterns!

The styles are cute, the patterns are easy to read and easy to sew. Another reviewer stated that the patterns run small, so I allowed for that but it turned out that I needed to make pleats, etc to make the dress fit and not fall off my shoulders. I am really glad I got this book and another Japanese Sewing book.

One of a kind guide to building plastic model ships

This is a valuable and frequently used guide on my model ship workbench. Written with the novice plastic model shipbuilder in mind, Wilkins de-mystifies the process of building a kit containing hundreds of parts, with complex instructions for sails and rigging. The pictures clearly show that with patience and the tips contained in this book, one can build a museum-quality sailing ship model comparable with scratch-built wooden ones. His technique for weathering a ship's copper bottom is excellent; I used it to realistically weather Revell's 1/96 "USS United States". The section on building the "USS President" (sister ship to the "USS Constitution" is a good systematic approach to modifiying and completing a complex model kit. The illustrations are excellent. I hope to make it up to the museum in Wisconsin to see Wilkins' collection of model ships.

Excellent basic book on building plastic sailing ships

I've used this book as a basic guide to building and enhancing several fully-rigged plastic model ships, and it is excellent. Besides having outstanding closeup photographs of built-up ships, basic modeling techniques are illustrated in step-by-step fashion, culminating in a complete chapter covering the construction of a 1/96 scale model of the USS President (modified from the USS Constitution). I especially found useful the special tips on hull strengthening and rigging, which are quite different with plastic models

Brilliant book

I love this book. The characters are more than interesting and the storyline is great and as wonderfully twisty as I've come to expect from this author. It's great fun to read and you just can't put it away.

I need the sequel! Now!

PS: If it helps anyone, my all time favorite authors are Jim Butcher and Robin Hobb. I'm not saying if you like one of them too, you will automatically also like Run to Earth, but yes, chances are good if you love a good fantasy book you'll love this.

Great read by a first time author

This review is spoiler free and I won't reveal anything about the plot that isn’t in the blurb because one of the great treats of this book is not knowing what’s going to happen.

I loved reading SF Mazhar Run to Earth novel. It’s the first in a series of four and I cannot wait until the next book is released. One of the biggest praise I can give any novel is that once I finished reading it I wanted more, more, more. This was definitely the case with Run to Earth, waiting for the second book is going to be a hard wait.

There were many things to love about this book but for me the key to a successful story is great characters, and I loved the characterizations in this book. By the end you have a very distinct idea of who all the different characters are and where their place is in the “world”. No two characters appear carbon copies of each other, each with their own voice and personality. These characters aren’t just set pieces to move the plot forward, they are multi-layered and come across as real people, suffering real emotions.

Mazhar creates a world and mythology that feels fresh. There’s realms, weapons, magic (or should I say powers) that is thankfully restrictive and not all powerful, demons/monsters, and hot guys/girls riding around on motorcycles. I could picture everything so clearly in my mine and it flowed so well that it was like a movie playing in my head.

This is not a stand alone book. It is very much Act 1 of a larger story. If you require action in every chapter, and a plot that moves at break neck speed then this isn’t the novel for you. This book is a slow burn, and I mean that as a compliment. It takes it’s time to develop it’s characters and set up the world. The author is laying the ground world, and some of the things that are being set up in this book might not be paid off until book 3 or 4.

Anyone who is familiar with Mazhar’s writing will know that not everything is as it seems. I thought I knew where this story was going, then BAM an event happened and now I have NO idea where this is going, and that really excites me.

This book isn’t perfect. There’s the occasional awkward info dump, it lags a tiny bit in the middle and the main character suffers a little bit from being the audience’s view point into the world, as everything we need to know about he has to learn too. But all of these things are minor, and the good far far far outweighs the bad.

I rate my books on how I feel at the end of reading them. This book had me so excited and amazed at the end. I am still on a story high more than 12 hours after finishing the book. I can’t remember the last book I read where I just had to sit and think about everything that had happened afterwards. I’m still thinking about it and have wild theories rolling around my head. I want lots of people to read this book just so I can have conversations with others about it.

It’s a solid 5 star read for me. I read a lot of YA books and this is best YA read I’ve had in a while.

A great YA fantasy book!

I was hooked on this story after I read the first paragraph and I could barely put it down. I really enjoyed the plot with all it turns and twists and I can only recommend the book! I’ve finished it a while ago and I’m still thinking about it and what’s going to happen next. I’m so excited about the next part! I’m looking forward to it so much!

The characters are all very well written and well developed. Not one of them lacks depth. Their emotions seem so real that you’re just feeling with the characters. I love how they grow so much in such a short period of time but it doesn’t seem forced at all!

I liked that even through it’s a fantasy world there are certain aspects that connect it to our world – you can imagine it really happening that way. I thought the whole “world” was really well introduced with lots of background information which I didn’t find boring at all.

The story includes so many things: war, romance, family, friendship, trust, lots of (really great written) fights, nice and bad guys. All relationships are so unique, not every friendship and family bond feels the same: you can see how different characters feel differently and act differently with each other. I really love that aspect of it!

You just feel how much hard work and passion went into the whole story!
