Nobel Prize–winning economist Sen deplores the "little boxes" that divide us in this high-minded but seldom penetrating brief against identity politics. Sen observes that ideologies of hate typically slot people into communities based on a single dimension that trumps the multifaceted affinities of class, sex, politics and personal interest that make up individual identities. This "reductionist" us-versus-them outlook is not limited to jihadists, he argues, but is a widespread intellectual tendency seen in Samuel Huntington's "clash of civilizations" paradigm, in postcolonial critiques of democracy and rationalism as "Western" ideals, as well as in efforts to "dialogue" with moderate Muslims. (These last, he feels, pigeonhole Muslims in purely religious terms.) Sen rebuts the "singular affiliation" falsehood with a cursory historical, literary and cultural survey of the diversity of supposedly monolithic civilizations (Akbar, a 16th-century Mughal emperor and champion of religious toleration, is a favorite citation.) Sen's previous work (Development as Freedom) injected liberal values into development economics; here, he argues that the freedom to choose one's identity affiliations is the antidote to divisive extremism. Stitched together from lectures, the book is dry and repetitive. While Sen's defense of humane pluralism against narrow-minded communalism is laudable, he never really elucidates the social psychology that translates group identity into violence. (Mar.)

Violence is "promoted by a sense of inevitability about some allegedly unique--often belligerent--identity that we are supposed to have," argues Sen in this rejection of the civilizational or religious partitioning that defines human beings by their membership in a particular group. Reminding us that each person is actually a composite of many affiliations, the author informs us that he is Asian, an Indian citizen, a Bengali with Bangladeshi ancestry, an economist, a teacher of philosophy, a Sanskritist, a believer in secularism and democracy, a man, a feminist, and a nonbeliever in afterlife; he omits, perhaps out of modesty, that he is a Nobel Prize winner. Those who would define themselves according to one monolithic system of categories (read jihadists, communitarians, and Samuel Huntington and his followers), says Sen, ignore both the composite nature of humankind and the freedom to choose how much importance to attach to a particular affiliation in a particular context and, in doing so, perpetuate sectarian violence. identity need not mean violent destiny

Amartya Sen, Harvard professor and winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economics, still remembers the day sixty-three years ago when a Muslim day laborer named Kader Mia stumbled through the gate into his family's yard in Dhaka, bleeding from knife wounds and begging for help. His father rushed him to the hospital where he eventually died. Kader was a Muslim who was murdered by a Hindu thug, and was but one of the thousands of people who died in Muslim-Hindu riots that erupted in British India in the 1940's. Although most of the rioters shared an economic class identity as poor people, partisans demonized each other with a lethal, singularist "identity of violence," in this instance a diminution of their humanity to religious ethnicity: "The illusion of a uniquely confrontational reality had thoroughly reduced human beings and eclipsed the protagonists' freedom to think." Sen's book is an exploration of this memory of his as a bewildered eleven-year-old boy.

Far too much violence in the world today is fomented by the illusion that people are destined to a "sectarian singularity." Stereotyping people with a singular identity leads to fatalism, resignation, and a sense of inevitability about violence. It partitions people and civilizations into binary oppositions, it ignores the plural ways that people understand themselves, and obscures what Sen calls our "diverse diversities." In particular, he objects to the "clash of civilizations" thesis made popular by Samuel Huntington. Along the way he explores the implications of his thesis for multiculturalism, public policy, globalization, terrorism, anti-Western rage, democracy, and theories of culture.

Sen argues against identity violence caused by the illusion of destiny in three ways. First, he appeals to our common humanity; everyone laughs at weddings, cries at funerals, and worries about their children. More important than any of our external differences, even though these are powerful and important, is our shared humanity. Second, he makes the obvious point that all people enjoy plural identities. To understand a person one must consider factors of civilization, religion, nationality, class, community, culture, gender, profession, language, politics, morals, family of origin, skin color, and a multitude of other markers. Plus, these diverse differences within a single individual depend on one's social context, whether the trait is durable over time, relevant, a factor of constraint or free choice, and so on. Finally, Sen urges us to transcend the illusion of destiny and identity violence by what he calls "reasoned choice." Instead of living as if some irrational fate destines people to confrontation with others who are different, a person needs to make a rational choice about what relative importance to attach to any single trait. Although Sen never explains why rational people succumb to the irrational violence of identity instead of choosing enlightened self-interest, economic incentives, and geo-political peace, this readable book by one of our most brilliant thinkers conveys an important reminder: "We can do better."

Some people don't like reading these thoughts

Amartya Sen's "Identity and Violence" is an excellent, perceptive and penetrating book. The reviews by the Washington Post and Publishers Weekly are rather obtuse. There is nit-picking to avoid the reality that Sen has shown Huntington's clashes of civilisations thesis to be fatally flawed, for example, and the reality of Maimonides' flight from Spain to refuge in Islamic lands rather than to jew-hating Christian Europe, and the reality of others of Sen's examples. Saying that his writing style is dry (I didn't find it so) simply suggests the level of literacy of the reviewer and perhaps most of the reviewer's audience. Some of the negative reviews by individuals are obviously written by people pre-determined to not like what this author says. Saying that Sen's thesis about multiple identities is no good because the Islamic terrorists don't think that way rather neatly avoids his point that far too many in "the West" think the same way as the Islamic terrorists in this regard. The attitude of many of the reviewers simply illuminates Sen's point that too many people on both of the artificial "sides" actually WANT to scream at each other across their imagined single-criterion divide. I urge everyone to bypass the more negative of the reviews posted here, and to go read this book and judge for themselves. I was certainly enriched by reading it. Perfect? No, but immensely worth reading. I wish it was required reading in schools around the world.

For Every Rational Being

This is a work that is at once literate, insightful, and witty. Dr. Sen discusses how the narrowness of self-definition has and does lead to violence among groups who, if they but thought more critically about it, have far more that binds them in common concern than that divides them into antagonistic camps. He also discusses how over generalizing can also dismiss the legitimate concerns especially of minorities. He does this in language that is a pleasure to read and with a mind that is at once incisive and also compassionate. The humor comes from recognition of how easily humans are led away from finding common ground by those who benefit most from keeping peoples divided.

This book is a necessary read for anyone who still prizes the ability to think critically and broadly.

Professor Andrew Dickinson is a Fellow of St Catherine's College and Professor of Law at the University of Oxford, a Solicitor and Consultant to Clifford Chance LLP in London, Visiting Fellow at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) and External Scientific Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law, in Luxembourg. He was closely involved in the Brussels I review process as an expert for the European Parliament and submitted a briefing note on the Commission's Proposal for a Brussels I bis Regulation.

Dr Eva Lein is the Herbert Smith Freehills Senior Research Fellow in Private International Law at BIICL. Hmmm...Intriguing...

...a book on effective classroom teaching that mixes classroom management with a constructivist and classroom community approach.

Wonderful. Dewey would be so satisfied by this.

Everything else you could need is included from theory to practical vignettes to handling specific classroom issues (not just behavioral).

It could have used pictures--it didn't have any--,but we can't always have what we want.

The information is wonderful sans the pics. Please check it out!

The "Merck Manual" of Education

This is undoubtedly one of the most popular college texts on teaching; at least, it certainly should be. The authors are leading experts on educational research, and their book is a comprehensive summary of what is known about teaching. Those preparing to be teachers should study it the same way medical students pore over The Merck Manual.

The book speaks with authority on nearly all important areas of instruction. For instance, whereas many popular books and articles repeat the myth that classroom rewards undermine student interest, G&B note that the research consistently shows that praise and other rewards are very beneficial when used properly. And while many teachers believe that high expectations magically transform students, G&B make it clear that it is what teachers do, not what they expect, that helps students learn.

College texts are seldom the sort of book that people turn to for a quick, entertaining read during vacation. However, as college texts go this one is well written and interesting, and it should be read by all teachers and kept on their shelves and referred to frequently.

The definitive history of Swedish Death Metal

I purchased this book a few weeks ago, as the cover is simply amazing, and I love death metal. I am currently about half way through and it has been a goretastic ride. Daniel Ekeroth writes the book from his point of view as a kid growing up in Sweden as a death metalhead. It recounts the origins of extreme music in Sweden, starting with the hardcore/punk bands in the early 80's. The book segues into the early thrash scene in Southern California, and how it impacted the youngsters in Sweden. Daniel tells of a bunch of Swedish bands that I have never heard of, but he writes about them so well that I want to listen to all of them. There are hundreds of band/album/demo photos as well to illustrate the scene.

If you are a seasoned metalhead, then you will enjoy this book and remember the good old days. If you are relatively young, like me, then you will get a fascinating look into how the old school Swedish death metal scene was like back then. Every respectable metalhead needs this book on their bookshelves. Really, get it, even if you haven't read anything since Left Hand Path came out, it's an awesome book.

Maybe one of the best books about metal I read !

This is a must-have for any swedish metal fan, but I think it's pretty obvious with the title...

Anyway, what makes the book really good is the approach of the research : contrary to most of books about metal, Swedish Death Metal doesn't focus on sales and biggest bands for the history, but on the underground and the whole demo/fanzine scene... which is in fact what metal is all about. The encyclopedia at the end of the book is pretty useful too, covering most of the swedish death metal bands that rose in the early 90's/late 80's and some more recent acts.
The only minus thing : sometimes, the views on bands and some history are a bit too subjective, but I think death metal addicts can easily correct.

Excellent

Like any book on music there are a lot of parts in the book that are subjective. That being said this is the most in-depth, interesting, and well researched book not just on metal but on any topic I've read concerning music.

The pictures and articles Ekeroth managed to scrape together for this amazing tome compliment the writing and history very well, and being that this is the most money I've spent for a book in a long time, it was worth every penny.

A star gets deducted because, even though it is clarified in the introduction that there a lots of parts that are subjective, there are areas where the author comes off "metal-er than thou." This is especially the case in the index of metal bands where bands that actually made money and became famous (see In Flames) are called "too commercial." Shouldn't the listener/reader be the judge of that? And maybe they are too commercial in Scandinavia, but last I checked an In Flames album would not stand a chance to crack the Top 40 in the American market, which IS way overproduced and manufactured.

That aside it has to be one of the best things I've read in a long time and I'm hoping someone comes along and puts out a book about Children of Bodom and the Finnish metal scene sometime in the near future (preferably in the King's English and not Finnish).

About the Author
Ray McCollum came to the Lord in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1971 while working in radio broadcasting. In 1975, he moved to Nashville, where he eventually started an advertising company. A friend who managed a local Christian radio station offered Ray fifteen minutes each day to teach the Bible, and the success of that program led him to start a Bible study that eventually grew into a church plant. In 1984, he sold his company and became pastor of Bethel World Outreach Center, where he ministered for sixteen years. In 2000, he resigned from the church to travel the world teaching the Bible. In 2009, Ray and his son planted Celebration Church in the Nashville area.

Based on Gen. 11:6 he writes, “God Himself says that there is enough power in our human imagination to make all things possible.” (33) We create the reality in our mind first (first creation), then in the physical world (second creation). He notes that there will be real problems during the process and that we must maintain hope.

He ends his book with seven practical disciplines to activate God-given imagination. They include taking an honest look at your life, learning to practice the presence of God, get in touch with your true identity in Christ, and four more. These are disciplines that will definitely take some time to cultivate.

I felt that there were some mixed messages in this book. “The circumstances that you see around you have been created by the images within yourself,” he writes. (38) But then he has “the presupposition that life is difficult because we are living in a sinful world.” (56) So do we create our external circumstances or are they part of living in a sinful world?

I felt another mixed message was one about prayer. If we have ever had an answer to prayer, receiving what we prayed for, “Your prayer created the future,” he says. (79) But then he goes on to write about prayer “requests.” So, did my prayer create the imagined answer or did God in His sovereignty do so?

McCollum writes, “When we create things, we fulfill God's will for our lives.” (50) If it were only that simple. I Thess. 4:3ff reminds us that God's will for us is much more than just creating. It involves sanctification, sexual purity, bodily discipline, and not taking advantage of another Christian.

Sometimes McCollum makes grand statements. For example, when writing about inner transformation, he says, “Transformation is no more difficult than simply looking at yourself in a mirror. But it has to be the right mirror,” he adds, noting that it must be the mirror of God's Word. Ah, if it were only that easy. His statement is based on 2 Cor. 3:18 but I have read books entirely devoted to that verse and the necessity of renewing one's mind, surrendering to the work of the Holy Spirit, etc.

McCollum tells us that we can change the world around us. But he also writes, “The truth is that there certainly are things coming our way that are out of our control.” (76) He writes, “Yet God invites us to be 'co-creators' of the future through prayer.” (79) So do we create the future or is it under God's sovereign control?

There is some good teaching in this book. I really appreciated his writing on our self-image and how that determines our outer behavior. I also appreciated his reminding us that our motives need to be right when using our God-given imagination to create. I appreciated him reminding us that we need to pray according to God's will.

That last issue, reminding us to pray according to God's will, recognizes God's sovereign role in our “creating.” I do wish there had been more emphasis on God's plan for our future and less on our own.

The author, Ray McCollum, explains about the origination of ideas in the mind as being the "first creation." The implementation of those ideas is the "second creation." Never is a known creation without the two steps to becoming a made thing. I have never considered this before. I appreciated the author's insights to help me understand that if a person is open to hearing from God at the "first creation" level in the mind, that miracles can result based on yielding to God's ideas (aligned with His word).

Many secular books have addressed the attitude of if you can dream it then you can make it happen. The author, early on before becoming a Christian, found this type of book to be inspiring and motivating. But later he realized God was not included in those books, and that the imagining could be used for evil causes.

I am thankful for the examples given of when people align their desires and their dreams with God's word. You will want to read of the resulting miracles documented. You will feel hopeful about what God can do with and through you.

The book addresses the cessationist point of view that the Holy Spirit is no longer active with signs and wonders in this modern age. It offers scriptural references to support the author's conclusions. This discussion in the book will enlighten those unfamiliar with the doctrine and how it has affected many modern churches.

In this welcome addition to the annals of punk, journalist Beeber does a commendable job of illuminating the Jewish backgrounds of many of punk's pioneers, including Joey Ramone (Jeffrey Hyman), Tommy Ramone (Tamas Erdelyi), as well as Lou Reed, Lenny Kaye, Blondie's Chris Stein, CBGB owner Hilly Kristal right up to the heir-apparent to the Jewish-punk crown, the Beastie Boys. The scene was centered in 1970s New York's Jewish Lower East Side, so it's fitting that punk might have a strong Jewish tradition. Beeber ably cobbles together interesting biographical sketches of the preeminent Jewish punks, rather astutely placing the punk rockers among the pantheon of Jewish entertainers, including the controversial comic Lenny Bruce. He also neatly ties the irreverent punk ethos to the American Jewish experience. Still, the book overreaches at times, straining under the weight of too much tangential cultural history and an overly academic tone. Beeber, however, has clearly done his homework, with more than 100 primary interviews and a clear grasp of the Jewish traditions within which he places punk. And just in time: with "Jewish-owned punk landmark" CBGB slated to close on September 30, Beeber's book will open a hidden chapter for many fans. (Oct.)

From Al Jolson and Irving Berlin to the Brill Building and beyond, Jewish influence on American popular music is well documented. Less known is the role Jews played in the seventies New York punk-rock scene. Profiling performers Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, Lenny Kaye, and the Ramones as well as key journalists, club owners, managers, and producers, Beeber discloses that prime movers in creating, supporting, and popularizing punk were Jews. Jewish identity is a touchy subject, however, and Richard Hell, aka Richard Meyers, refused interviews for the book because he disassociates himself from Judaism (Beeber insists he is still defined by it, anyway). Beeber draws a line from confrontational comic Lenny Bruce to Reed to the Beastie Boys and John Zorn. As perennial outsiders, especially as immigrants, urban Jews have traditionally straddled the sacred and the secular, adopting their new homeland's popular culture and adapting it with comedy, anger, and social commentary. An interview with Malcolm McLaren and an attempt to explain the Jewish punk fascination with Nazi imagery also prove fascinating. Benjamin Segedin

Amazing account of the genesis of "punk". Not sure the author "proves" his hypothesis of punk as partly an expression of the post-holocaust generation, but the history of the movement and the people involved is enlightening. Very well written.

I'm a fan of the origins of punk and of all the early artists. As a Jew I was well aware of the many of the Jewish connections to the NYC music scene at that time. The author does start to reach a little too much trying to find Jewish connections for the book.

¿What skills should you master to do modern econometrics and beyond? That is answered by Stachurski's. A text that points to the basis of all the topics included, without distractions; but with more than enough exercises to practice. I am still working on it.

This is an excellent text covering a wide range of topics. There are plenty of examples and many exercises (with solutions!) which test key concepts without requiring a ton of "cleverness," making the textbook useful for expedient self-study. Indeed, it's one of the few mathematical works that I've managed to read cover-to-cover.

Really good introductory graduate level book that provides a great deal of intuition

Here is the deal: I have a PhD in Economics was never good with data tools. Every Econometrics class I took started with linear regression and proceeded from there. I think this is a terrible way of teaching it. This book is different. It blends Probability theory well with statistics then adds Econometric tools as part of a bigger picture. It provides a lot of intuition. It also provides a better framework to add more skills in fields like machine learning as well. You can read this book on top of your undergraduate education then specialize on whatever you are going to do.
