About the Author

Steven M. Kay is one of the world’s leading experts in statistical signal processing. Currently Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, he has consulted for numerous industrial concerns, the Air Force, Army, and Navy, and has taught short courses to scientists and engineers at NASA and the CIA. Dr. Kay is a Fellow of the IEEE, and a member of Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi. He has received the Education Award for “outstanding contributions in education and in writing scholarly book and texts…” from the IEEE Signal Processing society and has been listed as among the 250 most cited researchers in the world in engineering.

How to approach signal processing problems

I used Dr. Kay's other two textbooks in classes during graduate school quite a few years ago. Those two were a bit theoretical, but established a very good groundwork. This textbook is more practical, including a section on just generally how to approach signal processing or analysis problems. I have used that section to teach some undergrads how to approach this type of problem.

Aside from the above, my primary goal with this book is to find any useful "rules of thumb", or "gems" that make data analysis or signal processing easier to do practically. So far, I am only about a quarter through the book (I'm just reading as I have time). One point that I have learned from the book was how there are no free lunches. There is a tradeoff between more robust approaches and more optimal versions that may take advantage of a priori information. I may have known that intuitively, but not as explicitly as I did previous to this book.

Way too much, unless you are a expert

Wow, what a book about preaching. The book is long, detailed, and yes tedious. I was warned before hand concerning the book, thanks Matt, of the nature of the discussion. Buttrick is a master, there is no doubt. He knows every thing and every one concerning preaching. This book is not for the average preacher, most would have no clue what he is talking about, it is mostly theory. This book is beyond me, I am not that good yet to practice this methodology. But the book was helpful in polishing the pulpit. The book is like fine sandpaper, it puts on a beautiful finish on a preacher, but you have to be polished before the paper would do the job. If you are a top notch preacher that needs the most challenging material and style, this book is for you. If not, read "Preaching" by Calvin Miller this year.

Preaching Paralysis by Analysis

I remember asking Fred Craddock about Buttrick's book at a conference. He looked at me with a grin and said, "I told David that the book was way too long and that he had no real research to back up the claims." As a preacher and a homiletics nerd it is fun to geek out with a book like this. I remember reading it as a young minister starting out and thinking I had found the Holy Grail of preaching. Buttrick seems to convey that he has cracked some homiletical code for preaching compelling sermons. After reading the book and preaching for 20 years in the local church I can tell you that this book is simply one preaching professor's attempt at a science experiment that doesn't prove anything. If preachers really tried to prepare sermons based on his "formula" they would drive themselves mad. More importantly, it would be a waste of time because, as Craddock noted, there is no proof that his theories are true or effective. In fact, I once watched a video of Buttrick preaching and was less than impressed. Granted, it was one sermon but if he was applying his theories in that sermon the proof was not in the pudding. Most listeners in churches would be bored stiff. I gave the book three stars because Buttrick put a great deal of effort into the book and it does contain some useful ideas about preaching. Let me save you some money and tell you the premise of the book which can be useful: Always consider the listener's perspective when preaching and vary your movements of thoughts so listeners don't get bored.

Best preaching book I have ever read

This is hands down the best preaching book I've ever read. I was so moved by the book that I considered getting a masters in theology at Vanderbuilt. This is coming from someone whose read over 100 plus books on preaching and oral communication. I consider it the preaching bible. My copy is marked up, highlighted and the pages are being held together with tape due to the many rereads and repeated references to various sections of the text.

The book is long, detailed and encyclopedic. However,the pain you endure while reading and attempting to incorporate the concepts into your sermons will result in pleasure for all those who hear your much improved sermons. I noticed an immediate improvement in my sermons after incorporating the concepts.

My only warning, this book is probably not for the first time preacher. If you have to give a talk for the first time and you need some advice, this is not the book for you. If however, you are someone with a basic understanding of how to put a sermon together, and have traveled the journey from sermon idea to delivery a few times, and want to take your preaching to next level, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

Alexander Reelsen is a software engineer living in Munich, Germany, where he has been working on different software systems, for example a touristic booking engine, a campaign management and messaging platform and a b2b ecommerce portal. He has been using the play framework since 2009 and was immediately astonished by the sheer simplicity of this framework, while still being pure java. Other interests include scaling shared-nothing web architectures and Nosql databases. Being rather a system engineer most of the time when he started playing around with Linux at the age of 14, Alexander got to know software engineering during his studies and decided web applications are more interesting than system administration. If not doing something hacky, he enjoys playing a good game of basketball or streetball. Play Framework Field Notes

Half of the recipes in this cookbook aren't recipes, but brief explanations of framework features ("understanding session management"), or examples that tie together several features ("including a Twitter search in your application").

Some of the recipes are outdated, because there are now modules that accomplish the same thing (e.g. integrating Lucene for full text searching, and Hazelcast for distributed caching), and the entire book may be obsolete when Play 2.0 is released later this year.

Even so, this book is worth reading to fill in a few of the many gaps left after reading the official documentation. Unfortunately I didn't find much on the two topics I was most interested in--authentication and cloud deployment--other than a flawed recipe for running scheduled jobs in a distributed environment.

The formatting of the Kindle version is terrible: The table of contents isn't indented properly (no distinction between level 2 and 3 headings), and, worse, code examples are not indented or highlighted at all.

Good recipes

The play framewok is about the time more and more appealing for java developers that want to go away from the JEE complexity. There is not a lot of books to help us start with the framework. Play Framewok Cookbook is the last one that wants to give us some valuable recipes. There is 60 of them inside 7 chapters not all at the them level.
The first one, is as in a lot of books a quickstart that shows us the basis of the framework. It contains some valuables informations on some concepts like extensions that are very practical but not as documented as other parts in the documentation of the framework.
The second chapter is for me the worst of the book (with the sixth one). The examples taken to introduce the controller layer are over complicated and so are not very usefull.
The third chapter presents a key point of the framework the modules. Here you have precise recipes that will give you some good starting point when you will want to use modules in your application.
The fourth chapter is a bit strange. It mixes some basic concepts of the framework like rendering and formats with usage of external api. It is not well balanced but as in other parts of the book shows a lot of useful code.
The fifth chapter give some good examples of how you can and cannot use modules to extend your application. It is a sort of continuation of the third chapter.
The sixth chapter give some examples of complex usage that are also to complicated. This chapter is too long for me.
Last but not least, the seventh chapter speak about going to production. Just for this chapter, this book worth is money. There is here a lot of very good examples about a part of a project that is often under estimated by developers. Here we have proven recipes that you can use to better handle the lifecycle of your project.
In conclusion, we have here a book that is not always well designed but that give you a lot of code that you can use as a starting point for your project.

A worthwhile resource with few caveats

I have been using the Play Framework for some time and I was happy to hear that a cookbook was being produced. Many of the recipes covered areas that are of interest to me and were not documented elsewhere. During a recent business trip, I had the opportunity to go through the book cover to cover during my plane trip.

The author is very enthusiastic about the framework and the choice of topics for the recipes represented a good cross section of interest areas. I especially appreciated the treatment of modules and the deployment of completed applications.

Overall, it is a worthwhile resource. I am an experienced software developer and what I look for in a cookbook may be different than others. I appreciate a gentle introduction to a recipe followed by clear examples. While the book tends to deliver in these areas, there is a lot of material to be covered and the text feels rushed. The treatment is useful and adequate, but would benefit by slowing things down just a bit. However, that would make the book 2 - 3 times larger than its current 270 pages.

There are a few typos in the example source code in the book (missing spaces or periods representing spaces). The typos weren't a distraction for me as I was able to infer what the author meant, but might cause others to pause to figure out what is wrong.

Better editing would make a good book a great book. The author is very knowledgeable but the prose, while informative, reads more like a series of blog entries rather that a reference book.

About the Author
Mercer Mayer began writing and illustrating children's books in 1966, and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Open almost any of the award-winning author/illustrator's books, and out may pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters.

"Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid," says Mercer. "Now that I'm a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like."

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his home. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completion of his studies, he set out with pen and ink to write and illustrate a collection of children's books, reflecting many of the adventures he experienced as a child.

In 2007, Mr. Mayer was commissioned by Laura Bush to create the artwork used for the National Book Festival held on September 29 on the National Mall. He was an honored guest to the event, giving a demonstration and autographing hundreds of books for fans who attended.

Wonderful little book

My mother "read" this series to me when I was a kid, and I remember always reaching for this one for years afterwards. The illustrations are outstanding -- my mother and I would laugh over a different page every time we read it, because of the boy's expression, the frog's grin, or the way the dog sat. Simple things, but not only was I learning to enjoy books, I learned to use my words to tell stories, notice details, and just have fun with my parents. This isn't a passive "hear a story read to you" experience.
Perhaps needless to say, this book is one of the first gifts I give to nieces and friends at baby showers or birthdays. At showers, everyone has a good laugh over the pictures, and it's always a big hit. My own kids will have the complete set -- probably before they're even born!

Great for Literacy

PERFECT! I have been wanting this entire set for a while, as a speech therapist, they are great books for language & confidence for young readers because they have no words to into mirador them. The story can be in THEIR words.
