The Collected Short Stories of Louis L'Amour, Volume 4: The Adventure Stories, by Louis L'Amour

The fourth volume of Louis L’Amour’s collected short stories features more than forty of the master’s greatest adventure tales in a keepsake edition to cherish for generations. This unique collection gathers stories guaranteed to thrill and delight readers again and again, establishing why Louis L’Amour is truly America’s favorite storyteller.

Louis L’Amour’s tales of adventure cannot be surpassed for sheer storytelling excitement, and they stand as a testament to his legendary appeal. Here are timeless stories of danger and daring, wanderlust and heroism, filled with ordinary men and women facing often insurmountable challenges with courage, dignity, honor–and heart.

Perhaps never before has a single volume contained so many breathtaking thrills: from the down-on-his-luck fortune hunter who risks everything to save a diamond-hunting couple walking straight into a jungle massacre to the mystery “hero” aboard a downed commercial plane dangling six hundred feet above certain doom. You’ll trek across the harsh steppes of East Asia with an American widow and her young son among a fierce nomadic warrior people, and you’ll relive a harrowing tale of survival at sea against thirst, madness, and the elements as a common seaman redefines extraordinary courage as simply “doing his job.”

Whether joining an American captain running a cargo ship through Japanese-controlled waters during World War II, only to find his vessel hijacked by traitorous pirates, or marveling at the resourcefulness of a young woman pushed to the limits of endurance as she flees a killer through a primeval forest, these adrenaline-laced tales of mystery, suspense, murder, and survival never let up and will keep your heart pounding long after the final page.

From those numbering a few intense pages to novella-length works, the tales in this action-packed anthology bear all the trademarks of the master’s touch–the historical accuracy, memorable characters, and timeless themes that have earned Louis L’Amour his unique place among American writers.

From Publishers Weekly
The fourth volume of the late L'Amour's short stories takes the author out of his familiar American frontier setting and into desolate and dangerous locales around the world, from "a narrow fjord at the end of the earth" on the southern coast of Chile to a "lonely isolated spot in the Coral Sea." While the characters are not traditional L'Amour, as "men of quick wit and valor" they share similar characteristics and values; freighter captain Ponga Jim Mayo, who plies the treacherous waters of the Indian Ocean during World War II (and is featured in nine of these 45 stories), succinctly sums up their worldview: "I'll make my own rules and abide by the consequences." The stories reflect the author's own youthful wanderings—as seaman, soldier and professional boxer—and, having been mostly written for pulp adventure magazines, are predictably formulaic. L'Amour's first publication, "Death Westbound," a Depression-era hobo story, crackles with his trademark prose: "Sometimes the shacks were pretty good guys, but a railroad dick is always a louie." No L'Amour fan will want to miss this collection. Afterword by L'Amour's son, Beau L'Amour. (Nov. 7)

From Booklist
L'Amour was known primarily as a churner-outer of westerns, but one of his most popular and enduring characters is Ponga Jim Mayo, the rough-and-ready, Nazi-baiting East Indies freighter captain who speaks with his right fist and punctuates with his left. The nine Ponga Jim stories form the cornerstone of this fourth volume of L'Amour short fiction. Dubbed The Adventure Stories--accurate up to a point but really just another way of saying nonwesterns--these tales showcase L'Amour's gift for compact, straightforward storytelling outside of the confines of his usual genre. Ranging from tales of train-hopping hobos to Himalayan tribes fighting to keep their distance from the modern world, the stories usually feature a tough hero shrugging off all odds for survival against hellish elements and zero-dimensional villains. The action is fast, hard-hitting, and a ton of fun. Every campfire should come with its own built-in Louis L'Amour to regale away the hours. Failing that, this volume adds a necessary touch of breadth to an already essential collection. Ian Chipman

ok for my young Amish friends
By P. Harding
I bought this for my young Amish friend who loves Louis L'amour. Since it is Amish approved I would say it is a safe book to give to young people but I have not ready any of his books. Being a western I would assume you would have some gunfights etc. The Amish are avid readers but just aren't allowed to read any old thing.

A lifetime of adventure, many different settings, What a great assortment of short stories.
By Thomas Erickson
My review is of the hardcover large print book NOT the audioCD....Amazon got it wrong.

I'm a big fan of the late great author Louis L'Amour. I read 8 of his western novels, almost all 5 stars, The Lonesome Gods, The Walking Drum and the Haunted Mesa ( his only sci fi), The Last of The Breed, all 5 stars....see my reviews. Many believe Louis was a world class western writer only( he did write a lot of them) but he was much more....a total author.

Here is a superb collection of short stories written by L'Amour across decades of writing. All were excellent and I enjoyed them all. What impressed me most with this collection was the diversity of the stories. Many different subject maters, great characters and various times in history. Also you can tell L'Amour actual visited several of these worldwide places, worked in some of the jobs and did a lot of historical research to add to accuracy to some of his fiction.

Some of the shorter stories can be read in 20 minutes,so are great to read while getting an oil change or waiting for a doctor or dentist visit. Some of the stories are longer and take a few hours. Stories about the US depression era, pre WW2 and WW2 commercial shipping tied into German and Japanese expansion attempts, far east adventure, South American jungle adventure and more. Sea captain heroes, sea plane heroes, lost cities of gold in the jungles, beautiful women, lots of fighting, double crossing spies and much much more. Lots of action brought to you very quickly as they are short stories.

Here is a collection opposite to the many westerns he wrote. There are no US wild westerns in this large collection.

Take your time reading this collection. Enjoy it. Pace yourself and enjoy a story or two/day. That way you can enjoy reading this large collection 1137 pages a long time. I liked this book so much I'll be getting as many of his other short story collections used at reduced prices that I can afford plus more of his novels.

Like Louis said on page 1135..."I'd like to be remembered...as a storyteller. A good story teller." INMO he was an EXCELLENT story tell...one of America's best. 5 stars and recommended.

Another great book in the series
By Matthew
Louis L'amour is the greatest writer of Westerns in the US if not the world. (Of coarse, this is only my opinion.) His stories, both short and long, are interesting and engaging. (It also helps that the good guy usually wins. :-)) They are accurate and my favorite short stories with Chick Bowdrie, the Texas Ranger who always saves the day. What I find especially entertaining about the books, is that when I listen to them and they have the full cast dramatization, I almost feel like I'm there with them and can picture the house or the town or the ranch etc. etc.

Both my father and mother read them all and enjoy them very much, so no matter what the format, a book, take, or CD, you will enjoy them time and time again.

Sorcerer's Apprentice paperback, by Tahir Shah

Sorcerer's Apprentice is an extraordinary tale of Indian magic. . . India is a land of miracles, where godmen and mystics mesmerise audiences with wondrous feats of magic. In great cities and remote villages alike, these mortal incarnations of the divine turn rods into snakes, drink acid, eat glass, hibernate and even levitate. A quest for the bizarre, wondrous underbelly of the Subcontinent, Shah's travels lift the veil on the East's most puzzling miracles. The Journey of Observation leads him to a cornucopia of characters. Illusionists all, some are immune to snake venom, others speak through oracles, or have the power to transform ordinary water into petrol. Along the way Shah witnesses a 'duel of miracles', crosses paths with an impoverished billionaire, and even meets a part-time god. Revealing confidence tricks and ingenious scams, Sorcerer's Apprentice exposes a side of India that most writers never even imagine exists.

Amazon.com Review
Do you nurse the fond desire to try your hand--or feet, that is--at firewalking? Go ahead. Tahir Shah writes in this beautifully conceived and executed work of literary travel, "Contrary to popular belief, firewalking is dead simple. The skin on the soles of the feet and the ash which covers the coals are both poor conductors of heat. Anyone can do it."

Do we dare trust Shah's word on this point? Maybe so, maybe not, for, though another character in his book bears the sobriquet, Shah is a superbly engaging trickster. The English-born scion of Afghani nobility, Shah takes his readers on a whirlwind trip across southern India that has at its heart one of the most unusual missions in goal-directed travel literature: namely, to find and learn the art of magic from one of India's greatest practitioners, a mysterious fellow named Hakim Feroze. Finding the master in Calcutta, Shah begs Feroze to accept him as a student; unfortunately, as we see, Feroze does so, though not without hesitation. Shah takes us inside sorcery boot camp, which involves strange drills such as digging a deep hole with a dessert spoon, left-handed; separating dried rice and lentils blindfolded; and catching a dozen cockroaches at once in a small tin mug. In recounting his education, Shah reveals a few professional secrets. For one, the Indian rope trick, that classic of conjuring, is effected not by legerdemain, but by the use of hallucinogenic smoke. And as to snake charming, well, 90 percent of India's snakes are nonvenomous, and it's easy enough to find a nonfatal variety that looks like one of the killer breeds.

Full of conjures and trickery, Shah's book offers an often humorous, sidelong education in the dark arts and more: it brings readers along on a surreal tour of India, affording a window to places well off the tourist track. It all adds up to a first-rate adventure. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
The child of Afghan parents living in England, Shah (Beyond the Devil's Teeth: Journeys in Gondwanaland) first witnessed magic at age 11, when an Indian Pashtun named Hafiz Jan visited. Twenty years later, he travels to India to learn the magician's trade from the Pashtun. Hafiz Jan sends Shah to Calcutta to learn from his teacher, a magician named Hakim Feroze, who subjects his new apprentice to tortuous physical and mental exercises before casting him out into the streets to make note of whatever oddities he encounters. Shah learns trade secrets of hangmen and gold scroungers, eats in a restaurant that serves dishes prepared from refuse, visits a skeleton-processing factory, watches a psychic surgeon "operate." Then, accompanied by a 12-year-old scam artist he describes as "a walking crime wave," he travels through India meeting sages, sorcerers, astrologers, mystics, healers, miracle workers and other brokers of the supernatural, including a medium who reads fortunes in eyeballs, a chemist who turns drinking water into petrol and a guru named Sri Gobind who causes Easter eggs to emerge from his ear, candles to ignite spontaneously and flowers to bow to him. Unlike most magicians, Shah reveals the secrets chemicals, props, sleight-of-hand and dozens of tricks e.g., Sri Gobind's flowers perform thanks to chloroform and his symbols of "new life and purity" are Safeway's expired chocolate Easter eggs. Despite an unconvincingly tidy final twist, Shah's strange focus and vivid, lurid and amusing descriptions distinguish this travelogue from the crowd. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
In this episodic journey into the magic of India, an apprentice of Indian magic explores the slippery nature of display, manners, and deception, debunking shaman trickery along the way. Growing up in England, Shah first learned about illusion from an Indian magician who cautioned him that, in his search for illusion, "seeking out the truth might be a slow uphill task." Some 20 years later, the author traveled to India in search of his teacher. Whether describing Calcutta, Varanasi, Bangalore, Sholapur, or Bombay, Shah celebrates India as a place one visits to search for "insider information" and observations of authenticity. Connections span from teacher to student, from The Guinness Book of Records to the scam du jour. Always entertaining and at times even funny, this catalog of characters reads like a hearty travel narrative; some parts even read like the early conversations of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. Highly recommended. Scott Hightower, Fordham Univ., New York

Entertaining, fascinating, and occasionally magical (a trick?)
By Eric Haines
This book has one of the finest first chapters I've ever read: one day a man from India shows up at an English boy's house to protect him. Note that the book is non-fiction. The rest of the book is how the author (who was that boy) many years later decides to go to India to learn how to be a magician like the man who came to him. At times the author seems to purposely act too credulous and think odd thoughts, to the point where you feel he's being that way in order to make for a more mystical read. He's also a bit disingenuous, in that the book implies he gives up a staid life for adventure; judging from his other books, he has never been too bored or boring. It's nonetheless a fun read, as he goes through many peculiar experiences and learns all sorts of strange knowledge about magical tricks and India itself. A surprising and wonderful (though sometimes slow) book.

Surreal indeed!
By Amazon Customer
Tahir Shah is an Englishman of Afghani/Scottish descent who writes what may be a new form: The eccentric maybe true, maybe not true, but true on a metaleval travel book. What I mean by that is that, while the details of his day-to-day experiences may be exaggerated and padded to make the book work with a coherent theme, the facts about the country remain true. I genuinely enjoyed this second book of his that I have read. In it, an 11-year-boy meets the guardian of his ancestor's tomb, learns a bit of magic, grows up, travels to India to tour and meet the guardian again, hoping to learn more slight of hand illusion magic. From there he is referred to his teacher's teacher, who is definitely the archytypical teacher as sadist. As Mr. Tahir learns the craft, we learn a great deal about India, about the travelling magicians, godmen, sadhus, charletans, etc. I found the book engaging from beginning to end and highly recommend it.

Entrancing, but somewhat disappointing
By Cordless Iron Man
It's a highly entertaining book, full of great stories and some interesting insights into parts of India's culture. But, like the godmen whose stories he tells and whose secrets he gives away, it doesn't amount to much more than entertainment.
The reason that the book is so easily comparable to a novel (cf. other reviews) is that it really has been written like one. The dialogue is almost certainly fictitious and a lot of the events, I believe, have been amended to make better reading. Yes, the book flows and it's a pleasure to read, but perhaps it shouldn't... some of the grit that I was expecting is conspicuously absent.
As much as I enjoyed the book I think that it was missing some of that squalor and detail and that could have made it a truly brilliant book. The photgraphs inside the book are marvelous and Mr. Shah does touch on some issues that are truly heartbreaking (his experience with the witch-hunt, for example); but he never seems to get to the core of the connection between the misery and the illusions.
The book bounces between quaint travelogue of aspiring illusionist and notes from a naive westerner in India (some of his cries of indignation at the conmen he comes across make him sound like a complete fool: I hope they're fictional). But between that there are moments of brilliance and I won't deny that I was entranced by the book.
I certainly recommend it, you'll be telling the stories that you read for weeks; just don't expect any... magic.

This book will provide in-depth analysis of concepts and step by step configurations for planning and consolidation for SAP BPC 10.1 classic version. We start with detail explanation of BPC components used for both planning and consolidation then we move on to consolidation specific pieces. We will examine the purpose of each component, where it fits into the whole process, and what options are available to configure the system. Rather than just reading about how to create an object, we’ll actually perform a demo exercise with step-by-step instructions for configuration. I had also included backup copies which can be installed on your system directly if needed, rather developing them. For planning demo, I had used cost center planning which includes features like creating dimensions and models; master and transactional data loads; input schedules; reports; logic scripts and so on. For consolidation demo, I had considered commonly used legal consolidation process flow which includes net Income to retained earnings movements, currency translations, IC Matching and Booking, US Eliminations, COI, Minority Interest and Goodwill. Along with the configuration steps, each chapter provides analysis of the results of the exercise and their significance within a financial statement.

The worst vacation ever!

Thirteen-year old Kyle thought spending a vacation on the Oregon coast with his family would be great. He'd never flown before, and he'd never seen the Pacific Ocean.

Kyle's perfect vacation becomes a nightmare while he's babysitting his sister, BeeBee. An earthquake hits the coast and starts afire in their hotel. While fighting their way through smoke and flame, Kyle remembers seeing a sign at the beach that said after an earthquake everyone should go uphill and inland, as far from the ocean as possible. Tsunamis, giant waves that often follow earthquakes, can ride in from the sea and engulf anyone who doesn't escape fast enough.

Can Kyle and BeeBee outwit and outrun nature's fury to save themselves from tsunami terror?

From School Library Journal
Grade 5–8—Kyle's excitement at vacationing with his family on the Oregon coast turns to dismay when Daren, the school bully and Kyle's nemesis, turns up in the same hotel. When Kyle is left to baby-sit his little sister Bebe while his parents embark on a dinner cruise, an earthquake and then a tsunami strike, starting a fire in the hotel. Kyle and Bebe must outrun the tsunami and save themselves and Daren from this force of nature. Through this experience, Kyle is finally able to stand up to his tormenter. Peg Kehret's novel (S & S, 2003) is blandly narrated by Terry Bregy who deflates much of the tension and drama of the story. Nevertheless, middle school boys might enjoy the survivor aspects of the tale.—Lisa Hubler, Memorial Junior High School, South Euclid, OH

Review
"When most people hear 'large-print book,' they immediately think senior citizen. But large-print editions of popular children's books -- from the powerhouse Harry Potter series to timeless classics like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer -- are now making their way onto the shelves of the Children's Department at the Canton Library. . . . Although large-print editions are targeted to the visually-impaired or dyslexic child, they can also be used by standard-vision readers. So Kershner [Children's librarian at the Canton Public Library] has decided against creating a special section in the Children's Department (as exists in the Adult Department) opting instead to intersperse large-print books on the shelves with the regular print versions of the same titles."
-- The Observer and Eccentric (October 2000) (The Observer and Eccentric 20001001)

"Thorndike Press has helped me not only find books I want to read, but they also look like regular books. That's important when you're a kid and you can only read Large Print, you want your book to look like all the other books. I'm reading a lot more now that we have found Thorndike Press."
-- Jim Bernardin, Islamorada, FL

"Everyone loves to read, there's nothing like curling up with a good book. We're a reading family, so when our son was diagnosed with Stargardt's Disease and only able to read Large Print, it was particularly difficult. Books on tape are wonderful but they don't fill the void of actually reading a good story. Large Print books have been around a long time for older people, but to find a good novel for a young person in Large Print began to feel nearly impossible. The books that Thorndike Press publishes have truly made a difference in my son's reading life. He can enjoy current novels as well as some of the classics that he missed reading when it became too difficult with regular print."
-- Sara Bernardin, Islamorada, FL

On the edge of my seat
By Never Too Old To Learn
I read this book so I could have literary discussions with my grandson. The story was intense, and at times tears came to my eyes. I have lived through several natural disasters, and this author really conveys the sense of danger and need to think of solutions for survival. I'm sure my grandson and I will have a lot to talk about. I highly recommend this book for 9-12 year-olds.

My reluctant reader now loves disaster
By Heather
I read this book with my 10 year old son, a struggling reader who never wants to read and he LOVED this book. It's a quick read about a young teenager, in charge of his little sister, in a life or death situation. Well, one life or death situation turns into another and another. It was a roller-coaster for my son and he never wanted me to stop reading. Least to say, we've ordered more Peg Kehret books.

A Harrowing Escape
By Joanne W. Ciccone
A harrowing story written first person from the eyes of a young person about escaping a rare tsunami in the Pacific Northwest when he was in charge of babysitting his younger sister on a family vacation. He and his family had read a sign that morning on the beach about what to do in case of a tsunami warning. This young man bravely went on a long climb inland after feeling a strong earthquake in the hotel where he was with his sister. His parents were on an evening cruise. The story is spellbinding and full of bravery and common sense along with a great perseverance in this young man.

A great read!

Conversations with My Agent, by Rob Long

Rob Long rose from staff writer to become co-producer of Cheers in its final season. When the show went off the air, he went from being top dog on a highly rated program to just another writer scrambling to get any project rolling. It wasn't pretty, but as Conversations with My Agent demonstrates, in hindsight at least, that's the hilarious reality of life in the wonderful world of the Hollywood sitcom. Suddenly thrown into the absurdity of Hollywood television development, Long and his writing partner find themselves with an office, an assistant, lots of cigars, and absolutely no idea what they are going to write. But that doesn't matter in Hollywood, where hype is more important than substance. Especially when you have a good agent. Here Long recants the true tale of his time in that limbo, from the wildly funny but awful meetings with studio executives to the unending string of phone calls with his self-absorbed agent, who is emblematic of the uniquely absurd chaos that is Hollywood.
Conversations with My Agent received terrific reviews.
Appeals to an enormous market including aspiring writers, screenwriters, producers, and directors.

From Publishers Weekly
Amusing and insightful, this is a deftly sketched portrait of life inside the Hollywood "development deal," that limbo in which writers get paid generously to create something new for a notoriously fickle set of bosses. Long and his writing partner, still in their 20s, had risen to become coproducers of the popular TV series Cheers before it expired; they were rewarded with an office, long lunches and many meetings at which to try to pitch their ideas. (No, their new shows never took off.) Long makes the story entertaining by rendering many scenes-especially those involving his nameless, genderless agent-in sitcom form (dialogue, stage directions, etc.). "People in this business love their souped-up vocabulary," Long writes, and he affectionately skewers Hollywood pretension ("I love a quirky love," says one exec). Long doesn't tell us much about himself or his relationship with his writing partner, but the story skitters along fast enough for that to be forgivable. And when one reviewer calls their pilot "snappy" and another denounces it as "without snap," you can sympathize if well-paid creative types think the world wretched. Unfortunately, the book's charm and verisimilitude are vitiated by Long's contradictory admissions that it is "half true" and "mostly true."
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Television writer Long (Cheers) has written a humorous account of what it means to be a TV scriptwriter in Hollywood. It's a TV version of Linda Obst's recent insider's view of feature filmmaking, Hello He Lied (LJ 10/1/96). Interspersing the book with conversations with his agent and writing in the style of a TV script, Long imparts the "inside" story on getting a TV deal, "one of those entertainment industry creations that...sounds suspiciously like goofing off. Essentially the studio agrees to pay a writer a minimum sum,...hopeful that the writer...will decide, 'What the hell, I may as well create a hit television show.' " Though very funny at times, it's a bit too much of an insider's view for the general reader. Though not an essential purchase for public libraries, it would be a good addition to media colletions.?Rosellen Brewer, MOBAC Lib. System, Monterey, Cal.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
In three short years, Long and his TV-show-writing partner, Dan Staley, progressed from hopefully offering scripts around Hollywood to being co-executive producers of the perennial hit sitcom, Cheers. But then, after just one season with Long and Staley at the helm, series star Ted Danson decided to move on, and the pair's cushy jobs instantly turned into a paragraph on their shared resume. Their brief stint at the top and their struggle to regroup and carry on are the subjects of Long's entertaining, fast-moving memoir that profits from his decision to cast the text into TV-script format, complete with stage directions. The story lends itself delightfully to this device. Whether as an entertaining recreational read or as a cautionary tale for would-be scriptwriters, a worthwhile effort. Mike Tribby

Great Casual Reading Experience
By Bruce Bevitz
This book includes a series (most probably apocryphal) of conversations with Rob Long's agent(s) which sheds light on his world. It was a quick read and funny, but mostly grin and nod funny, not laugh so that those around you think you are demented funny. I knew about Rob Long from his podcasts and his articles, and purchased this book because it was mention by somebody on one of these podcasts, either GLOP or Ricochet. This book is apolitical, but exhibited the mild manner and common sense that I had heard from the author in the aforementioned podcasts. Now understand:this book is no earth shattering epic, and it is probably will not classified as a classic, but it made me want to know the author better. He appeared to be the type of person I would want to have as a friend.

funny look inside the bizness of being a) a Junior ...
By judygarlandheartbreaker.com
A realistic, funny look inside the bizness of being a) a Junior Writer for TV, and, b) graduating to show-runner and the frustrating personalities
one encounters. Told in a wry, slangy voice, Rob Long never loses his humor, gives a dynamic snapshot of an industry built on emotional quicksand. Most enjoyable if you're interested in this milieu.

Funny and insightful. The two books together works very well - hard to believe he didn't write them like that! Rob Long probably made some enemies with the stories related here, but I thank him. A must-read for anyone interested in TV writing & production.

Paul Tillich, Carl Jung and the Recovery of Religion, by John P. Dourley

Is religion a positive reality in your life? If not, have you lost anything by forfeiting this dimension of your humanity?

This book compares the theology of Tillich with the psychology of Jung, arguing that they were both concerned with the recovery of a valid religious sense for contemporary culture. Paul Tillich, Carl Jung and the Recovery of Religion explores in detail the diminution of the human spirit through the loss of its contact with its native religious depths, a problem on which both spent much of their working lives and energies.

Both Tillich and Jung work with a naturalism that grounds all religion on processes native to the human being. Tillich does this in his efforts to recover that point at which divinity and humanity coincide and from which they differentiate. Jung does this by identifying the archetypal unconscious as the source of all religions now working toward a religious sentiment of more universal sympathy. This book identifies the dependence of both on German mysticism as a common ancestry and concludes with a reflection on how their joint perspective might affect religious education and the relation of religion to science and technology.

Throughout the book, John Dourley looks back to the roots of both men's ideas about mediaeval theology and Christian mysticism making it ideal reading for analysts and academics in the fields of Jungian and religious studies.

Review

"His book makes for very invigorating reading as page after page reveals a really erudite encounter between Jung and Tillich… Read this book, then, for a masterful discussion of two truly sophisticated, spiritually developed individuals." – Tony Woolfson, International Journal of Jungian Studies, Vol. 1 No. 1, March 2009

"I found the author’s synthesis of Jung and Tillich a compelling analysis of the nature of the human condition... This important book illuminates that aspect of Jung’s thought which has too often been dismissed pejoratively by uninformed critics as ‘mysticism.’" – George Bright, Journal of Analytical Psychology, Vol. 55, 2010

About the Author

John Dourley is Professor Emeritus, Department of Religion, at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He graduated as a Jungian analyst from the Zurich/Kusnacht Institute and has published widely on Jung and religion.

Worth the Effort
By Elton Hall
John Dourley's study of Tillich and Jung is not easy reading. It is dense, complex and detailed, comparing the understanding of the human being, human destiny, God and history in the writings of Paul Tillich the theologian and Carl Jung the psychologist. But it is rich with insight of the kind that makes for goosebumps.

Because both Tillich and Jung drew upon and appropriated the visionary work of Christian mystics, especially Meister Eckhart and Jacob Boehme, but also Joachim di Fiore and the Beguines, Dourley provides a bonus in his discussions of these figures. He shows in detail how Tillich's thought evolved from his monumental Systematic Theology to the last days of his life, how Jung progressively revealed his deepest thinking, and how they converged and yet remained apart. More than anyone else, Dourley has shown why both reached beyond the Trinity to a quaternity and why both thought doing so is imperative (and unavoidable) in the growth of humanity.

This book collects a number of essays delivered as papers in various places. Even though revised, they can be just a little repetitive, but given the wealth of complexity in both thinkers, even where issues are addressed a second time, the insights are new, the angles of view are different, and the reminders are valuable.

Anyone who wishes to deeply plum the most fundamental concerns of either Tillich or Jung will find this book rewarding. And anyone who has contemplated the future of humanity and of the individual will discover a great deal to consider.

For those of us who will probably never read, much less deeply study, the theology of Tillich or the collected works of Jung, this book is an eye-opening discovery. Dourley has done a great service that deserves to be more widely known.

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin!

"From the first page...the reader is back in the moody, brooding atmosphere of Rebecca." -The New York Times

From the bestselling author of Rebecca, another classic set in beautiful and mysterious Cornwall.

Philip Ashley's older cousin Ambrose, who raised the orphaned Philip as his own son, has died in Rome. Philip, the heir to Ambrose's beautiful English estate, is crushed that the man he loved died far from home. He is also suspicious. While in Italy, Ambrose fell in love with Rachel, a beautiful English and Italian woman. But the final, brief letters Ambrose wrote hint that his love had turned to paranoia and fear.

Now Rachel has arrived at Philip's newly inherited estate. Could this exquisite woman, who seems to genuinely share Philip's grief at Ambrose's death, really be as cruel as Philip imagined? Or is she the kind, passionate woman with whom Ambrose fell in love? Philip struggles to answer this question, knowing Ambrose's estate, and his own future, will be destroyed if his answer is wrong.

About the Author
Daphne du Maurier was born in London in 1907, the second daughter of a famous stage actor and actress. Her first novel was published in 1931, but it was her 1938 novel Rebecca which made her one of the most successful writers of her time. Alfred Hitchcock's adaptation of the book won the Best Picture Oscar in 1940, and he used her material again for his classic The Birds. In 1969, Du Maurier was created a Dame of the British Empire.

At the age of 81, Du Maurier died at home in her beloved Cornwall, the region that had been the setting for many of her books.

Excerpt from Chapter One

They used to hang men at Four Turnings in the old days.

Not any more, though. Now, when a murderer pays the penalty for his crime, he does so up at Bodmin, after fair trial at the Assizes. That is, if the law convicts him, before his own conscience kills him. It is better so. Like a surgical operation. And the body has decent burial, though a nameless grave. When I was a child it was otherwise. I can remember as a little lad seeing a fellow hang in chains where the four roads meet. His face and body were blackened with tar for preservation. He hung there for five weeks before they cut him down, and it was the fourth week that I saw him.

He swung between earth and sky upon his gibbet, or, as my cousin Ambrose told me, betwixt heaven and hell. Heaven he would never achieve, and the hell that he had known was lost to him. Ambrose prodded at the body with his stick. I can see it now, moving with the wind like a weather-vane on a rusty pivot, a poor scarecrow of what had been a man. The rain had rotted his breeches, if not his body, and strips of worsted drooped from his swollen limbs like pulpy paper.

It was winter, and some passing joker had placed a sprig of holly in the torn vest for celebration. Somehow, at seven years old, that seemed to me the final outrage, but I said nothing. Ambrose must have taken me there for a purpose, perhaps to test my nerve, to see if I would run away, or laugh, or cry. As my guardian, father, brother, counsellor, as in fact my whole world, he was forever testing me. We walked around the gibbet, I remember, with Ambrose prodding and poking with his stick; and then he paused and lit his pipe, and laid his hand upon my shoulder.

'There you are, Philip,' he said, 'it's what we all come to in the end. Some upon a battlefield, some in bed, others according to their destiny. There's no escape. You can't learn the lesson too young. But this is how a felon dies. A warning to you and me to lead the sober life.' We stood there side by side, watching the body swing, as though we were on a jaunt to Bodmin fair, and the corpse was old Sally to be hit for coconuts. 'See what a moment of passion can bring upon a fellow,' said Ambrose. 'Here is Tom Jenkyn, honest and dull, except when he drank too much. It's true his wife was a scold, but that was no excuse to kill her. If we killed women for their tongues all men would be murderers.'

I wished he had not named the man. Up to that moment the body had been a dead thing, without identity. It would come into my dreams, lifeless and horrible, I knew that very well from the first instant I had set my eyes upon the gibbet. Now it would have connection with reality, and with the man with watery eyes who sold lobsters on the town quay. He used to stand by the steps in the summer months, his basket beside him, and he would set his live lobsters to crawl along the quay in a fantastic race, to make the children laugh. It was not so long ago that I had seen him.

'Well,' said Ambrose, watching my face, 'what do you make of him?'

I shrugged my shoulders, and kicked the base of the gibbet with my foot. Ambrose must never know I cared, that I felt sick at heart, and terrified. He would despise me. Ambrose at twenty-seven was god of all creation, certainly god of my own narrow world, and the whole object of my life was to resemble him.

'Tom had a brighter face when I saw him last,' I answered. 'Now he isn't fresh enough to become bait for his own lobsters.'

Ambrose laughed, and pulled my ears. 'That's my boy,' he said. 'Spoken like a true philosopher.' And then he added, with a sudden flash of perception, 'If you feel squeamish, go and be sick behind the hedge there, and remember I have not seen you.'

He turned his back upon the gibbet and the four roads, and went striding away down the new avenue he was planting at the time, which cut through the woods and was to serve
as a second carriage-way to the house. I was glad to see him go because I did not reach the hedge in time. I felt better afterwards, though my teeth chattered and I was very cold. Tom Jenkyn lost identity again, and became a lifeless thing, like an old sack. He was even a target for the stone I threw. Greatly daring, I watched to see the body move. But nothing happened. The stone hit the sodden clothing with a plonk, then shied away. Ashamed of my action I sped off down the new avenue in search of Ambrose.

Well, that was all of eighteen years ago, and to the best of my recollection I have not thought much of it since. Until these last few days. It is strange how in moments of great crisis the mind whips back to childhood. Somehow I keep thinking of poor Tom, and how he hung there in his chains. I never heard his story, and few people would remember it now. He killed his wife, so Ambrose said. And that was all. She was a scold, but that was no excuse for murder. Possibly, being over-fond of drink, he killed her in his cups. But how? And with what weapon? With a knife, or with his bare hands? Perhaps Tom
staggered forth from the inn upon the quay, that winter's night, all lit with love and fever. And the tide was high, splashing upon the steps, and the moon was also full, shining on the water. Who knows what dreams of conquest filled his unquiet mind, what sudden burst of fantasy?

He may have groped his way home to his cottage behind the church, a pale rheumy-eyed fellow stinking of lobster, and his wife lashed out at him for bringing his damp feet inside the door, which broke his dream, and so he killed her. That well might be his story. If there is survival after death, as we are taught to believe, I shall seek out poor Tom and question him. We will dream in purgatory together. But he was a middle-aged man of some sixty years or more, and I am five-and-twenty. Our dreams would not be the same. So go back into your shadows, Tom, and leave me some measure of peace. That gibbet has long since gone, and you with it. I threw a stone at you in ignorance. Forgive me.

The point is, life has to be endured, and lived. But how to live it is the problem. The work of day by day presents no difficulties. I shall become a Justice of the Peace, as Ambrose was, and also be returned, one day, to Parliament. I shall continue to be honoured and respected, like all my family before me. Farm the land well, look after the people. No one will ever guess the burden of blame I carry on my shoulders; nor will they know that every day, haunted still by doubt, I ask myself a question which I cannot answer. Was Rachel innocent or guilty? Maybe I shall learn that too, in purgatory.

How soft and gentle her name sounds when I whisper it. It lingers on the tongue, insidious and slow, almost like poison, which is apt indeed. It passes from the tongue to the parched lips, and from the lips back to the heart. And the heart controls the body, and the mind also. Shall I be free of it one day? In forty, in fifty years? Or will some lingering trace of matter in the brain stay pallid and diseased? Some minuscule cell in the blood stream fail to race with its fellows to the fountain heart? Perhaps, when all is said and done, I shall have no wish to be free. As yet, I cannot tell.

I still have the house to cherish, which Ambrose would have me do. I can reface the walls where the damp enters, and keep all sound and well and in repair. Continue to plant trees and shrubs, cover the bare hills where the wind comes roaring from the east. Leave some legacy of beauty when I go, if nothing else. But a lonely man is an unnatural man, and soon comes to perplexity. From perplexity to fantasy. From fantasy to madness. And so I swing back again to Tom Jenkyn, hanging in his chains. Perhaps he suffered too.

Abridged version - NOT the full book
By LMorgan923
My Cousin Rachel is a wonderful book - one of my favorites. It is NOT what you are buying here. This is a ridiculous abridgment of a classic. That is mentioned nowhere in the description of what you are buying. That should not be allowed.

You get what you pay for. This is so weird. Its like a synopsis. ..not at all the full book by Daphne which is available for $9.95 of course. What happened to the original Kindle promise that books over 50 years old would be free?

By Mary Ann Martina
WARNING: This Kindle edition is a 47 page condensation of a 300 page novel. This should and the other Kindle edition should be removed from the Kindle Store. Both are terrible condensed/ adapted versions of the full-length novel but are not labeled as such and there is nothing in the synopses to indicate this . I was able to find the whole novel on Nook at Barnes and Noble. .Thanks to Amazon policy I was able to return for a refund.

You'll want to put this on your "keeper" shelf!
By A Customer
"Gerrity's Bride" is the story of Matthew Gerrity and Emmaline Carruthers. The premise the author uses to get the two together is unique (at least to me). Emmaline's father and mother separated many years ago and Emmaline's mother took her from their Arizona ranch back to her mother's parents' home in Kentucky. There, Emmaline was raised as a "lady" by her grandparents as her mother withered away. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Emmaline's father, Sam, married Arnetta, Matthew Gerrity's widowed mother. Together, Sam and Arnetta have a daughter named Theresa. Sam and Arnetta die tragically, but not before Sam has put together a very cut and dried will which tells Emmaline and Matthew to marry and have children or risk losing the ranch. The ownership of the ranch is not as important to either Em or Matt as the raising of their little sister Theresa. Matt is very attached to Theresa, and Emmaline is thrilled to have a sister whom she didn't know existed. Since neither will give up Theresa, they agree to marry and love soon follows. There's a good sub-plot in the book that has someone trying to kill Emmaline (you'll have two jealous females to choose from as the prime suspect.) Very sensual, very tender, this is a sweet love story you'll cherish for years.

A Book Worth Buying!!
By A Customer
This is from the inside front cover:
"Are you asking for more company in there?" Matt asked from around the doorway. "We usually keep this door shut when the room is being used," he drawled. "Please pull it shut, would you?" Emmaline asked, the towel in readiness as she bent forward in the water, her knees pulled to her breasts. "Sure you don't want company?" From just beyond the door, his voice reached her, tinged with taunting amusement. "Please, Matt," she whispered, her words wispy with embarrassment. He sighed mockingly as he reached one long arm within the room, his finger grasping the knob and deliberately closing the door. "Don't be late for breakfast," he called to her abruptly. "Maria only serves once. After that, you're on your own." "And I hope you choke on yours," she grumbled as she stepped over the edge of the tub and enfolded herself with the towel she still clutched.

Are you hooked yet?

A ROMANCE WORTH READING!
By M. Hartmann
Gerrity very carefully nudges Emmaline into marriage.

Neither one is willing to give up the custody of their little sister, Tessie.

With her oh so proper upbringing Emmaline is at first determined to take Tessie back to her grandfather's farm in Kentucky. Emmaline just wants Tessie to love her.

Matt becomes fascinated with Emmie's sass and is going to preserve the ranch for Tessie's inheritence. Using a bit of high-handidness in planning the marriage to Emmie, she walks right into Matt's web.

Emmaline has just enough niavity to pooh-pooh any danger to herself but strange things begin to happen. Matt is finding it strange to be concerned about Emmaline's welfare. Of course, the kissing helps to engage the hormones and emotions.

I thoroughly ejoyed the secondary characters and the plot against Emmie. Boy was Matt not clued in.

Lots of fun! Definitely recommended - an excellent read!
